Leicester City of Sanctuary

Leicester City of Sanctuary … working to create a climate of welcome for asylum seekers and refugees in our city and county

City of Sanctuary is a national charity which tries to build a ‘culture of hospitality’ for people seeking sanctuary in the UK. The aim is to create a network of places throughout the country which do their best to include asylum seekers and refugees in the lives of their communities. City of Sanctuary was founded in Sheffield in 2005 and the Leicester branch (registered charity no 1138017) was established two years later.

We just wanted to say a huge thank you to Horses for Causes for a fantastic afternoon helping us explore resilience as a idea through their unique workshops - as well as introducing us to all of the lovely horses they care for (as well as a few equally lovely dogs).

We all left happy having got so much from the experience, and exploring ourselves in a unique and creative way.

I'd like to say a massive thank you to LULS and PRO BONO of University of Leicester's law department for hosting an exciting fundraising football event and making me feel so welcome in attendance.

It was great fun. But I guess that's easy for me to say when I'm standing on the sidelines with a bottle of water when the weather is unseasonably hot!

Hello all... its not often that we make requests but if anyone is able to help us out, please get in touch!

We are looking for some (4) desks for our teeny tiny office. Ideally all the same size, and drawers would be a bonus!

If you, or anyone you know can help, please drop me a message!

We'd like to thank Clarendon Park Orchestra, their director David Calow and their lovely audience for all their donations during the fundraising event last Saturday.

A grand total of £919.52 was generously given, and will be put to excellent use providing meals and activities for refugees and asylum seekers. This money will make a real difference to those seeking sanctuary in Leicester.

And on top of all that, it was a wonderful night too - so once again, thank you so much for everything to everyone involved.

We'd like to say a big thank you to the Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur UK, who visited our Drop In recently and donated a number of warm coats for the winter - with cold days ahead of us, they'll be invaluable for the people who come to us seeking sanctuary.

It was lovely to meet you, and would love it if you'd drop in for a cup of tea if you're ever passing!

We were hosted warmly by Aylestone and St Andrews church this weekend to speak about the work we do.

Our Sanctuary Ambassadors and many of our volunteers are people with lived experience and they're the pillars of our Sanctuary community, inspiring all of to work harder and work better together to make Leicester a place of welcome and safety for those fleeing violence and persecution.

Well, we've reached the end of the Big Give Christmas Challenge this year, and I wanted to say a big thankyou from the bottom of my heart to everyone who donated to us this year.

What really stood out to me this time around is the breadth of support we saw - the number of donors to our campaign was significantly higher than any previous year - getting close to doubling some past campaigns. It's wonderful to see so many people getting involved. We know it's tough out there for everyone, so your generosity means a lot.

So once again, thank you so much for everything - we're touched.
