Shama Women's Centre

Shama Women's Centre Shama was founded in 1985 with the aim to empower women socially, economically & educationally.

Many of the women that use the Centre face the risk of becoming isolated, due to low incomes, cultural and languages barriers. However over 27 years the Centre has become a β€˜hub for thousands women’ in Highfields and across Leicester. Its friendly multi-lingual staff, onsite childcare have encouraged women to participate in the range of educational, social and well being programmes it offers, incl

uding an exclusive women only sauna and gym. The Centre has helped thousands of women improve their confidence, gain qualifications, provide volunteering opportunities and find employment; working with a network of local groups to ensure that the needs of the individuals are met.

It was a pleasure for our Project Coordinator, Beena Solanki, and Gambling Harms Engagement Worker, Salma Limbada, to represent Shama Women’s Centre at the Family Fun Day at the African Caribbean Centre on Thursday 6th August 2026.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to connect with local families and communities while raising awareness of important health research, including EXCEED and Dementia Care in South Asian Communities.

We also had meaningful conversations about gambling harms, including the impact gambling can have on individuals, families and communities, as well as raising awareness of the different types of gambling.

A special thank you to our Health Ambassadors, Hafsah Mohammad and Meera Bay, for joining us and helping encourage greater participation from ethnic minority communities.

Hafsah shared: β€œI was really pleased to contribute, as historically, some populations have been widely underrepresented in genetic research. I am thankful for the opportunity to raise awareness and contribute to finding better treatments that work well for everyone.”

Thank you to everyone who visited our stand, engaged in conversations and helped us promote inclusive health research and awareness of gambling harms.
