Shama Women's Centre

Shama Women's Centre Shama was founded in 1985 with the aim to empower women socially, economically & educationally.

Many of the women that use the Centre face the risk of becoming isolated, due to low incomes, cultural and languages barriers. However over 27 years the Centre has become a ‘hub for thousands women’ in Highfields and across Leicester. Its friendly multi-lingual staff, onsite childcare have encouraged women to participate in the range of educational, social and well being programmes it offers, incl

uding an exclusive women only sauna and gym. The Centre has helped thousands of women improve their confidence, gain qualifications, provide volunteering opportunities and find employment; working with a network of local groups to ensure that the needs of the individuals are met.

June is PTSD Awareness Month...Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. While the effects may not always be visible, support, understanding, and compassion can make a real difference.

This month, let's raise awareness, challenge stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. No one should have to struggle alone.

If you or someone you know is affected by PTSD, support is available. Learn more: https://www.ptsduk.org/

Our CEO, Khudeja Amer-Sharif, was delighted to be speaking as a keynote speaker at the UKRPF-funded Workshop hosted by Nottingham Trent University.

The workshop explored the important and complex links between antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and human migration, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss challenges around healthcare access, policy, governance, and the wider implications for global health.

Khudeja shared insights from Shama Women’s Centre’s work supporting diverse communities and highlighted the importance of inclusive, community-led approaches in addressing health inequalities.

Thank you to Nottingham Trent University for the invitation and for facilitating such an important discussion. 🤎

This case study shares the journey of one of Shama Women’s Centre’s service users who accessed our befriending, domestic abuse and welfare services following years of abuse and isolation.

Through compassionate support, specialist interventions and a safe space to be heard, she rebuilt her confidence, accessed the help she needed, and began moving forward with hope for the future.

At Shama Women’s Centre, we are committed to ensuring that no woman has to face these challenges alone. 🤎
