We’re pleased to share details of an upcoming CPD event hosted by the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust on Thursday 14th May 2026.

This full-day seminar brings together expert speakers to explore traditional building techniques and heritage conservation, including:
• Timber-framed buildings
• Mud-and-stud construction
• Recording heritage buildings at risk
• A hands-on lime mortar application workshop

The day offers a great balance of theory and practical learning, with opportunities to engage directly in conservation techniques.

If this sounds of interest, or you know a colleague who would benefit, feel free to share and spread the word!

James Stevens Curl
1937 – 2025
Architectural Historian and Architect

The Leicestershire and Rutland Society of Architects is saddened to hear of the death of the eminent architectural historian Professor James Curl. James joined the Leicester School of Architecture in 1978 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by the university in 2014 in recognition of his ‘distinctive contribution to the study of architectural history’. James received several other major awards including a PhD from the University of London, the British Academy’s President’s Medal in 2017 for his ‘Contributions to the History of Architecture in Britain and Ireland’ and a Visiting Fellowship at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. James was currently visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of Ulster.

James was a prodigious author writing many books ranging from the well-established ‘Oxford Dictionary of Architecture – Third Edition’ to well-researched texts on Freemasonry and funerary monuments. One key text ‘Making Dystopia: The Strange Rise and Survival of Architectural Barbarism’ published in 2018 hits out at the modernists who after the First World War created a new architecture which he considered to be remote from the aspirations and needs of humanity.

James Curl had a great personality and an engaging smile. He was highly respected for his architectural knowledge and his sometimes controversial academic opinions. He will undoubtedly be sadly missed by the wider architectural community. James is survived by his daughters Astrid and Ingrid and by his second wife Professor Dorota Iwaniec-Curl.

His legacy endures in the pages he wrote and in the minds he shaped.

May he rest in peace.

What an incredible afternoon we had stepping back in time to explore Leicester’s legendary Roman past!

At our last LoveArchitecture2025 Event, we welcomed visitors to the newly redesigned Jewry Wall Museum, reopened in July after a stunning transformation.

A huge thank-you to Maber Architects for guiding us through the revitalised spaces and sharing the vision behind this remarkable project. We had such a great tour from Jan Moore and Richard Issleib.

The event brought together heritage-lovers, curious minds, and local history fans. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
