In light of the latest UK budget announcement, I bring you astonishing news from the world of policy and precipitation. Despite all the whispers, rumours and doomsday predictions, the government has still not put VAT on collecting rainwater. I know, I was shocked too. This means that my modest little income and my very respectable rain-collecting pot remain entirely free from taxation, no matter how enthusiastically I leave it out in the next downpour. In fact, if I wanted to collect rainwater in another pot for a friend, a family member or even a slightly neglected pot I found at the back of the shed, there is still no tax. Not a penny. Not even a whisper of a surcharge for excessive enthusiasm.

Naturally, this raises an important point for gardeners nationwide. If the clouds are willing to provide and the government is willing to ignore it, then I strongly advise you take advantage while you still can. We simply cannot predict what next year’s budget will bring or whether some bright spark in the Treasury will eventually spot the financial potential of British weather. Until then, it is open season for rainwater collection. Line up your pots, barrels, buckets and decorative vessels, and let the heavens subsidise your garden.
