Research shows us that our first 1001 days are the most important. Even though we don’t remember much of it as adults, our experiences as babies shape who we are.

Before we talk, we are developing confidence, self esteem, physical skills and connections with others.

Having good infant mental health lays down the foundations for all future development, allowing us to build healthier adult brains.

Our early intervention at Home-Start acts as a building block for a child’s development.

Even the youngest babies have their own unique personalities.

Some are adventurous and curious. Some are cautious and observant. Some love being around lots of people. Others prefer quieter moments.

There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to parenting.

Getting to know your baby as an individual helps build trust, confidence and connection. The more we notice what makes them uniquely them, the stronger our relationship becomes.

Babies start communicating long before they say their first word.

A cry, a yawn, a smile, turning their head away, kicking their legs, staring into your eyes – these are all ways your baby is telling you something.

As dads, one of the most important things we can do is slow down and notice. The more we pay attention to our baby's cues, the more we learn about what they need and how they are feeling.

You don't need to get it right every time. Communication is a conversation, and you're learning together.

Every baby communicates.
Every baby experiences the world differently.
Every baby is unique.

As dads, we don't need to have all the answers. What matters is being curious, paying attention and building a relationship with our baby one moment at a time.

The more we notice their signals, try to understand their experiences and celebrate who they are, the more secure and connected they can feel.

This Baby Communication Week, take a moment to watch, listen and connect. Your baby has been communicating with you all along.

The theme for is ‘Attunement’ but what does that actually mean?

In short, it means how 'in tune' you are with your baby. How do you connect with your baby?

Attunement can happen in simple everyday moments:
- Making eye contact
- Sharing smiles
- Talking, singing and reading together
- Comforting and soothing when they're upset
- Following their lead during play

We're continuing to shine a light on parental loneliness that is affecting mental health too.

This is Wendy's story - she has always struggled with her mental health. "I had post-natal depression after my first child, and sadly, my partner passed away when I was 6 months pregnant with my second child, it was a very dark time. I feel I have always had some kind of depression in my life, ups and downs.

My mental health dipped again when I gave birth to my youngest child, Brooklyn. I was under the perinatal mental health team at this time. I just couldn’t face going back to work or mixing with others. It felt safer staying at home, but it was also very lonely. I hardly went out of the house, and I feared that my issues were affecting my children, especially Brooklyn.

I was referred to Home-Start by my health visitor. At the time, my life felt very small. Brooklyn’s world was even smaller. I also didn’t know anyone with young children, which added to the feelings of being alone.

That support changed everything and slowly, their world grew bigger.

Sadly, Wendy isn't alone in feeling alone. Read our loneliness report here: https://www.home-start.org.uk/news/loneliness-survery-results
