Barrow Upon Soar WI
Our May Birthday Party meeting opened with the Resolutions Vote. Our dress code for the evening and Monthly competition was ‘Think Yeehaw!’ ALL of the ladies attending wore at least one western themed item. The room was also decorated in a Western Sun Flowered Theme in keeping with our ‘Calendar Girls 2026 Programme’, as we entered the room we found out our ‘Cowgirl Name’ which caused some hilarity & there was also a Photo booth so our Ladies could pose with various props and of course Sunflowers!
Our entertainment for the night, which was great fun was provided by Samantha and her team from ‘Rhythm n Boots Line Dancing’ who, in an hour demonstrated four Line Dances – with a lot of Patience! And It didn’t matter if you turned the wrong way or forgot what you should have been doing – Grapevining instead of stamping your cowboy booted feet. After the fourth dance we were expected to then return to the first dance and dance it again! All of the ladies said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience! After singing Happy Birthday to US and eating a lovely selection of Birthday Cakes made by our Committee Bakery it was time to hang up our cotton pickin’ Cowboy hats n rootin’ tootin’ boots and head on back to the homesteads.

Some ladies from Anstey WI and their families enjoyed a boat trip with the Baldwin trust. Although the weather was far from perfect, the scenery was good and they spotted a variety of waterfowl, some with their young.
At the June meeting our speaker was Jean Brown, mother of our assistant secretary Sheryl Bramley. Her subject was quilting and patchwork. She began with a history of quilting, which was initially aimed at keeping warm, but also used as armour. Few realise that quilted garments were still worn when metal armour was introduced. It was worn underneath. Patchwork began when quilts began to wear out and needed repair.
The real excitement of the meeting began when this remarkable nonagenarian displayed an array of the stunningly beautiful quilts she has made in the course of her lifetime. The larger items were held up in the front, but then some were passed around, to a hum of conversation in admiration. Attempts to silence this failed, but nothing daunted, Mrs Brown simply said “I don’t mind; I’ll just shout.”
There was a sampler quilt, baby quilts, and a kaleidoscope one. All showed beautiful stitching, artistry of design, and a wonderful sense of colour. It was a superbly enjoyable evening. Thank are due to Sheryl and her friend Sue Crook who interrupted their holiday to come and help.
The competition was for a piece of patchwork and quilting, and was won by Sheila Timms with a novelty item, a chicken made principally from two log cabin squares. Second was an attractive piece by Jan Darby, and joint third were Liz Heggs and Jill Taras.

Loughborough Ladies WI
For our June meeting, our Speaker, Jo Golby, dressed as a lady’s maid, entertained us with her talk “Top to Toe”. One of the roles of the lady’s maid would be to collect herbs, berries and plants from around the world to make the potions and remedies for her lady. If you wanted to dye your hair the starting point was a pot of stale urine which would act as a bleaching agent. Elizabeth 1 was a follower of fashion with her alabaster face aiming to look pure like the Virgin Mary which was attractive to males at the time. However, this look was achieved using a lead based make up Venetian Ceruse which possibly contributed to her death. Another desirable feature was for women to have a 17.5-inch waist requiring very tight stays and whale bones causing internal damage. Jo had us all laughing as she explained how they implemented these trends. A highly informative and amusing talk.
