We look forward to more RMC promotions in the months to come!

"Volunteering with Leicester Sea Cadets is incredibly rewarding — it’s about helping young people build confidence, skills and a sense of belonging. I’m proud to play a small part in supporting such a dedicated team."

Volunteer's week - meet the team

CPO (SCC) Conor Coates has been a member of the unit since 2015 and has undertaken roles such as Unit Training Officer and First Lieutenant during his time as an adult volunteer.

Conor enjoys teaching marine engineering and paddle sports. He also supports D of E expeditions. Outside of cadets Conor is an engineering lecturer.

"I volunteer with Sea Cadets because I genuinely enjoy being part of young people’s journeys seeing them grow in confidence, find their strengths, and surprise themselves along the way. I don’t have one singular “great” moment, because the whole experience has been good in its own way.

The courses we’ve run, the trips we’ve taken, and the challenges we’ve worked through together all carry their own stories, their own ups and downs, and their own little wins. It’s those shared moments, the laughs, the setbacks, the breakthroughs, that make volunteering feel meaningful."

Volunteer's week - meet the team

PO (SCC) Jemma Webster-Freeman is one of our junior instructors. She also teaches first aid and is working towards climbing wall instructor and power boat instructor.

"I enjoy volunteering at Sea Cadets because it gives me the opportunity to support and encourage young people as they develop confidence, teamwork, and life skills. I find it rewarding to help cadets learn new things, take on challenges, and achieve their goals in a positive and supportive environment.
It makes me so proud seeing the junior cadets receiving there badges and certificates.
I have learnt so much in my time here and am greatfull for all the new experiences
Outside of cadets I enjoy spending time with my dogs and visiting family."

Volunteer's week - meet the team

Mr Richard Sleath is a long standing member of Leicester Sea Cadets having served as a cadet, uniformed volunteer, chairman and member of the UMT. Outside of cadets Richard enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and cycling.

"I joined as an adult instructor in January 1969, I had been a Marine Cadet since late 1963. I had some great experiences as a Cadet. My first week course was at HMS Pembroke, located in Chatham Dockyard in late 1965, a cookery course. Then in the late summer of 1966, I joined a party of Sea & Marine cadets on an Educational cruise, on board the MS Dunera. We sailed from Southampton, with Royal Marine Band playing us off, with siganture tune " A life on the Ocean Wave" . Whilst at sea, the school children had to attend classes. But the party of cadets stood watches on the bridge and engine room. Our final destination was Genoa, when we left the ship, to fly home to Gatwick, all for a SCC price of £20.
I then did 5 years as an adult uniformed instructor, attending some fantastic training courses,. Royal Marines Eastney, Loch Ewe for my Adventure training, and a week at the RM SBS base, to gain my canoeing training. I left TS Tiger in September 1973, as I was getting married.
I wasn't away for long, as I was persuaded to join the UMT, which I did for the next 20 years. I thought I had finished my volunteering, but in late 2013, the Eastern Area Officer wrote to me, (he addressed me as a friend of Leicester Sea Cadets) as the Unit had been closed. We re opened the unit in Early 2014.
I volunteer, as I had a fantastic time as a Cadet and a uniformed instructor, so just trying to help the cadets of today. So they can have as much adventure and fun that I experienced."

Volunteer's week - meet the team

PO (SCC) Imogen Knowles is one of our blue jacket instructors. She enjoys teaching drill, catering and rowing. Outside of cadets Imogen loves spending time with the horses and works as part of the offshore team.

"My journey with the Sea Cadets began in 2016 when I joined Leicester unit as a cadet. Over the years, I progressed to Petty Officer Cadet before officially stepping up to become an adult volunteer at 18. Today, I absolutely love passing on my knowledge by teaching boating, drill, and catering. There is nothing more rewarding than watching our cadets gain confidence, master new skills, and have fun along the way. My passion for maritime training also extends outside the unit, where I serve as the Cook Coxswain aboard TS John Jerwood.

Looking back, I have gained so many unforgettable experiences, but my absolute favourite memories are proudly leading our unit at the Armed Forces Day parade and marching in the National Trafalgar Day Parade during my cadet days. I am incredibly proud to volunteer alongside such an amazing team and help inspire our next generation!"

Volunteer's week - meet the team

PO (SCC) Kirsty Harlow is one of our blue jacket instructors. She helps on expeditions and enjoys teaching first aid and rowing. Outside of cadets Kirsty works in a nursery and enjoys spending time with her family.

"I joined as an adult volunteer in 2021 when I was 20. But was a cadet from the age of 16-17
I joined as an adult volunteer because when I was a cadet the staff helped me and supported me so much. So I wanted to give the same thing back when I became of the age to volunteer. I have always wanted to support the children and make a positive impact on their lives.

My favourite sea cadet memory is when we took the cadets to wells next to the sea and we did some paddle sports with them and went around wells showing them all the different parts of the beautiful town and went to the beach. It was so nice to see all of the cadets having an amazing time and making memories they will never forget. And also volunteering at the sea cadet summer camp at HMS Raleigh and seeing the cadets gain so many qualifications and having lots of fun."

Volunteer's week... meet the team

Sgt (SCC) Kamala Lang, Sgt (SCC) Kyle James and Sgt (SCC) Joe Farrer are part of our RMCD instructor team. They requested a trio post...

Kam - "I joined cadets in November 2021 and immediately got hooked as now I had something to do outside of school. I gained loads of experience and loads of opportunities such as DoFE and going down to CTC Lympstone for my DLs. I made many friends along the way and 2 I have stayed with even after I aged out. The best thing about being a volunteer now is helping cadets gain their confidence and help them with gaining experience and seeing them gain awards and ranking up. My favourite memory is going down to Buckingham palace with Sgt Farrer and Sgt James for our DoFE Gold award and I’m so grateful for the friends I’ve made and stayed with."

Kyle - "I joined cadets in 2021, it was immediately an amazing place to me, as I needed to do something outside of school. I have gained lots of qualifications and experience in various aspects of cadets, such as DofE, going to Bisley to compete in national interservice competitions and becoming an NRA coach. I have made many friends, but two have stood out more than most. The best thing about being a volunteer is being able to help young people gain valuable life skills and have a place that they enjoy. My favorite memory is going to Buckingham Palace with Sgt Farrer and Sgt Lang for our gold DofE award."

Joe - "I joined sea cadets in 2019, I started off as a sea cadet but then transferred over to Royal Marine cadets. During my time as a cadet I gained loads of knowledge and experience while making friends along the way. I stayed on as staff as I want to pass down the skills I developed while being a cadet, to see a cadet having that ‘light bulb’ moment when they understand what I am teaching them and having them succeed in their cadet career makes me proud of them. My favourite memories overall were Leek training area, where I was able to do a troop attack alongside my friends and achieving my gold DoFE and having the opportunity to go down to Buckingham palace with Kam and Kyle and to share the memory together with them."

Volunteer's week... meet the team

Our DC, CSgt (SCC) Jodie Norman joined Sea Cadets in September 2010 as an older cadet, moving on to become a volunteer when she turned 18.

Jodie volunteers because she likes to be a safe person for cadets to learn and grow in trying new things during the vital years which will shape their future selves.

Her favourite cadet memory was on parade in London for National Trafalgar Day celebrations.

Outside of cadets Jodie loves to play rugby, build lego and watch the F1. She works as an electrical lecturer and part time electrician.
