We raise money for marine conservation in the UK through our community of Sea-Changer businesses and individuals who work together to raise money for marine projects. We create unique partnerships with businesses who help us raise money in a variety of ways that suit them, their customers and, of course us!

Are you working on a marine conservation project in Scotland but struggling to connect with other groups due to travel costs or getting things off the ground? We have a fund for that 🤔

The Scottish Learning Fund supports community-based groups in Scotland who are involved in marine conservation to learn, share knowledge, network and develop skills with other groups. We’re especially keen to support early-stage or small groups to grow and learn from others 🌱

We know that in-person learning and networking speed-up community project development and help spread good practices. However, travel costs and times between Scotland’s coastal communities—especially in the Highlands and Islands—can be a major barrier for small voluntary and community groups. This fund aims to directly address those travel challenges. For example, in 2025 Blue Hope Alliance used a Scottish Learning Fund grant to empower local groups to monitor and protect marine environments. The project succeeded in surveying the local maerl bed for the first time in twenty years with the help of the local community.

This is a reminder that our Small grants fund is open for up to £500 and you can apply any time for a quick decision!

Your project will need to address the root causes of marine conservation threats and challenges in the UK, prevent or reduce negative impacts on UK coastal and marine environments and/or species, or add to the body of knowledge about marine conservation threats and challenges in the UK.

Ullapool Sea Savers recently received a small grant as part of their ‘Please Flush Responsibly’ project, which you can read about on their website. The grant was used to print stickers to encourage people to only flush the three P’s to protect marine life.

This is exactly what our Small grants are about - enabling ad hoc UK marine conservation initiatives, with approved grants reaching you as soon as possible so that support can go straight to our seas 🫶

We can’t believe Blue walks 20 miles a day! 🤯

Blue is walking the entire UK coastline in aid of Sea-Changers and after being inspired to protect the sea 🌊

We wish Blue the absolute best for the rest of her travels, you can also follow Blue’s page for beautiful photos from her walk and donate via the link in our bio.

Meet the common whelk and discover why it could help us understand the future of our seas. 🌊

Common whelks are predatory marine snails found around the UK coast. They use their strong muscular foot to move across the seabed and locate prey such as small molluscs and worms using chemo-sensors. Unlike many more mobile marine species, whelks have relatively limited movement, meaning they have less ability to escape changing environmental conditions. 🌡️

As our oceans continue to warm, populations may face new challenges. But can they genetically adapt quick enough?

This is where Adaptive Seascape comes in.
Led by Dr. Hugo Harrison at the University of Bristol, the project will combine genomic data and environmental projections to investigate how ocean warming could affect whelk populations.

By looking at targeted genetic markers alongside future temperature scenarios, the research will explore:
🧬 Which populations have the greatest potential to adapt
🌡️ Which populations may be most vulnerable to warming
🗺️ Where populations could be at greatest risk of maladaptation
🎣 How this information could support sustainable UK whelk fisheries management

The ultimate goal is to create a vulnerability map that can help identify populations at risk and provide evidence for future fisheries policy.

Mark your calendars! Our 2026 Autumn Main Grant closes to applications on the 30th September 🍁

This is a one-off grant (i.e. not continual funding) to UK-based charities and other organisations (including schools) carrying out marine conservation related activities.

This could mean addressing the root causes of marine conservation challenges in the UK, or reducing or researching impacts on an environment or species in the UK 🐠

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Leigh, one of our fantastic Trustees at Sea-Changers! 🪼

Leigh has a lifelong love of the sea, enjoying everything from fishing, scuba diving and sailing to beachcombing. His favourite marine species is the octopus, “once you’ve met one, you could never eat one.” 🐙

One of Leigh’s favourite UK beaches is Aberlady Bay, a huge stretch of coastline with the added intrigue of two WWII mini-submarines. His love of the beach goes right back to childhood, with fond memories of building sandcastles at Scarborough, eating waffles with strawberry jam and cream, and catching blennies in rockpools. 🍦

As a Trustee, Leigh plays an important role in supporting Sea-Changers through governance, supporting our CEO and helping with the strategic development of the charity. For Leigh, volunteering is all about the cause, supporting local communities to take action for marine conservation, as well as the wonderful people involved.

One particularly memorable moment was being involved in the creation, planning, recruitment and appointment of Sea-Changers’ first Executive Director. It was a landmark moment for Sea-Changers and for UK marine conservation, and one that Leigh was proud to be part of.

When asked why people should support Sea-Changers and ocean conservation, Leigh’s answer is simple: “We enable local communities to take action and make a difference.” 😊
