Not everyone on the frontline is a paid member of staff.
Some are volunteers like Nicole, a emergency response volunteer for British Red Cross and a Fire Cadet leader with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

She tells us why volunteers are so vital in an emergency - and why young people need to be more aware of risks...

What incidents have you volunteered at?

"I was on the ground for the Ratby and Kirby Muxloe gas outage. At first, it was very stressful, especially when you’re arriving at an incident and things are still unfolding. However, what really stood out to me was seeing the community come together and support one another, which was incredibly powerful."

Why are volunteers so important in an emergency?

"They bring something that professional responders can't always provide: local knowledge, trusted relationships and a genuine connection to the communities they serve. They empower communities to take an active role in their own resilience, rather than relying solely on emergency services or statutory organisations."

Why do we need to make young people more aware of risks?

"We want young people to feel confident about dealing with unexpected situations rather than feeling afraid or overwhelmed, whether that's around emergencies, online safety, extreme weather, fire, or personal safety. "

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain has been issued for today and tomorrow (Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August) – along with a warning of possible flooding.

The risk of localised flooding is higher because of months of hot, dry weather which has left the ground extremely dry.

This week’s wet weather may lead to difficult driving conditions, disruption to power and other utilities, and a possible risk to life from fast-flowing flood water.

To help prepare for the risk of flooding:

• Know your flood risk and sign up for free flood alerts and warnings
• Pack a ‘grab bag’ of essential items, like medicines, bottled water and insurance documents, in case you need to stay put or leave your home in a hurry
• Check in on relatives and neighbours, particularly those who may find it harder to cope
• Check gutters, drains and downpipes, and clear leaves and debris
• Have an emergency plan and keep it handy – include things like emergency phone numbers
• Check out property flood resilience measures
• Find local flood resilience activities, such as your local flood warden scheme
• Never enter flood water, either on foot or in a vehicle. In an emergency, call 999

A trip over to Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Western Station this evening to meet with the volunteers at Leicestershire & Rutland British Red Cross ER.
These are the guys that at 2 in the morning and your house is on fire or flooded, will be your emergency response, feed you, clothe you, keep you warm and make sure you have all the information necessary to rebuild….
