The Royal Air Forces Association is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of RAF veteran and Association member Alan Kennett at the age of 102.

LAC Alan Kennett enlisted in the Royal Air Force in October 1942 at just 18 years old. Drill sessions on the promenade and physical training on the beach at North Shore, Blackpool, prepared him for the demands of wartime service. Upon completing his technical training, Alan was posted to several bases across the South of England as preparations intensified for Operation Overlord and the Allied invasion of mainland Europe.

We were delighted to surprise Alan earlier this year at a special event hosted by Jaguar Land Rover, to commemorate Alan’s years of service to his country, where a trainee intake at RAF Halton was named in his honour. Members of the first ‘Kennett Intake’ were in attendance alongside Alan’s family and friends.

The 81st anniversary of VJ Day was yesterday and we spoke to Peter Follett, as he recounts the experiences of his uncle, Clifford Smith, who was captured by the Japanese in 1942.

Peter describes the challenges faced by all during this time, including Clifford's wife Marjorie, who endured two years of uncertainty about her husbands survival.
