"Our gut is home to millions of microbes that make up the gut microbiome, which may play an important role in how we respond to cancer treatment. Dietary fibre and microbial supplements, such as probiotics, are being investigated as ways to modify the microbiome and potentially improve treatment outcomes.

"Our study brought together the available evidence on these approaches in people with cancer to understand which may help reduce side effects and help cancer treatments work better."

We’re pleased to welcome Cecilia Morel, PhD student, Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London to speak at our upcoming Patient & Carer Day about using your gut to improve cancer treatment outcomes. The day will also be filled with expert talks on mesothelioma symptoms, access to specialist teams and more.

Join us on Thursday 1 October at the King Power Stadium, Leicester LE2 7FL.

"In August, five of us took on the challenge of abseiling 100 metres down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth to raise money for Mesothelioma UK. It was one of the most frightening things we’ve ever done, but it was nothing compared to the challenge my dad, Kevin, has faced since being diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2024.

"Dad has undergone immunotherapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but his treatment has now come to an end. It is scary that this cancer exists and it takes many, many years to present itself. Despite everything Dad has been through, he is still fighting this terrible disease with incredible strength and determination. Amazingly, he chose to take part in the abseil alongside us.

"Some of our team were absolutely terrified, and stepping over the edge was by far the hardest part. Once we were over the ledge, we just had to trust ourselves and keep going. We’re so proud that all five of us completed the challenge together.

"Thanks to the incredible generosity of our family, friends, colleagues and supporters, we have raised £2,300 for Mesothelioma UK so far, and our fundraising page is still open for anyone who would like to donate.

"Taking on this challenge together was a way of showing our support for Dad and helping raise awareness of mesothelioma and the vital work that Mesothelioma UK does for patients and families across the UK."

We want to send a huge well done to Natalie and Team Abseil on their amazing achievement! Not only are you raising awareness of this preventable cancer, which, as you say, can take many years to develop, but the incredible amount that you’ve raised will go directly towards supporting people affected.

Thank you, too, for sharing about your dad - we’re so pleased that he took part in the abseil with you.

Well done, team! 🎉
