The UK government’s new funding to improve energy efficiency in council homes has been criticised as “wholly inadequate” by environmental groups and local leaders. While £179 million will help upgrade around 20,000 homes, this is a small fraction of what is needed, with 2.5 million households still in fuel poverty. Critics argue that the competitive bidding process and limited funds fall short of the estimated £100 billion required to decarbonise social housing across the country.
