This Tuesday 31st March at the Foxlowe "The Choral".
Yorkshire’s Got Talent

Ralph Fiennes leads an excellent ensemble of new and established talent in this funny and moving First World War drama by beloved writer Alan Bennett. It’s 1916 and, as war rages on the Western Front, the Choral Society in Ramsden Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. With the annual performance looming, the society is forced to change its entry rules to recruit teenage boys and girls for a performance of Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, a work chosen because it’s pretty much the only thing with a tune that wasn’t written by a German.

The choir must also engage a new chorus master, and despite suspicions that he has something to hide, the best bet seems to be Dr Henry Guthrie, driven, uncompromising, and recently returned from a career in Germany. Filmed in Saltaire.

“A quiet and consistent pleasure: leaves us with a heartbeat of wit, poignancy and common sense”. Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.

Film starts at 7.45 pm, bar from 7 pm. Tickets available on the door, from the cafe or online.

The Finns we do for love

Multi award-winning filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki makes a masterful return with Fallen Leaves, a timeless, hopeful and satisfying love story that won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, and was awarded ‘Best Film of the Year’ by The International Federation of Film Critics.

Set in modern-day Helsinki, the film tells the story of Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), two lonely souls whose chance meeting at a local karaoke bar is beset by numerous hurdles. From lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism and a charming stray dog, the pair’s path to happiness is as bittersweet as it is ultimately delightful.

Lee - screening Tuesday 10th March
Sorry, that’s Lee, not Leek

Whilst a film called Leek would surely break all box office records worldwide, it is a pleasure that still awaits us. In the meantime, Lee portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller (Kate Winslet). As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse, instead defying expectations and traveling to Europe to report from the frontline of WWII.
Determined to document the truth of the N**i regime, in spite of the odds stacked against female correspondents, Lee captured some of the most important images of World War II for which she paid an enormous personal price. There, in reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice a the voiceless. Her photographs remain among the most significant and historically important of the second world war, changing war photography forever.

Film starts at 7.45 pm, bar from 7 pm. Tickets available on the door,
