Gateway Shed, Leek

Gateway Shed, Leek GatewaySHED is a community Shed where members come together to share the tools, resources & skills needed to work on individual and community projects.

GatewaySHED is a converted disused garage space in the grounds of the Foxlowe Arts Centre in Leek - transformed into a community Shed or workshop space. We offer a community workshop space where members can share the tools, equipment, space and learning to work on their own or community projects. We are inspired by the learning and outcomes of Men’s Sheds set up in Australia – and a movement now g

rowing in popularity across the UK. We are a member organisation of UK Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) who have supported us in providing guidance in overcoming hurdles and practical issues in creating the space and the best approaches to creating a welcoming, inclusive membership model that members of our local community will want to be a part of and own. You don’t have to have practical skills already to get involved - many of us have learnt lots by just "having a go" since we joined. But if you do and are happy to share your knowledge and skill set informally, then this is the place for you! We are simply a space open to people for whom being part of a community Shed appeals. The Shed runs as a membership. Membership is offered to men and women over the age of 18 years. Annual membership costs just £15 per annum to cover insurance and admin costs. We then ask members to make a contribution to attend a session of a minimum of £4. You are welcome to use our materials (if we have them) for a donation into the pot to keep stocks going - or bring your own. Sessions are overseen by a Responsible Shedder - someone who has experience of using the equipment and tools - which you will be trained to use safely whatever your level of expertise. For some people, this is simply showing you the quirks and required best practises with our machines - for others, this may take longer and you will be supported to use the equipment you want to use until you are comfortable and confident to do so safely. The Responsible Shedder is NOT a tutor and we do not provided "training" - however being in the Shed environment enables you to chat to, learn from and absorb the knowledge of a whole range of folk with a whole ranges of skills and talents! We provide PPE (personal protective equipment) and all members are responsible for their own health and safety at all times. Opening Sessions (as at January 2026)
Tues / Wed / Fri / Sat 10am - 1pm

If you wish to donate any old unwanted tools that you may have lying around or become a “Shedder” (the official name for anyone who is a member of a Shed!) then please get in touch. Please just call into a session or email [email protected] to find out more. www.foxloweartscentre.org.uk

Happy Volunteers Week to you all!
The movement is like few others in the voluntary sector. It grows, evolves, ebbs and flows. It's shaped by the people within it, living it and owning it, benefiting from it, on a daily basis.
Many of those involved don't regard themselves as "volunteers" - including some of the folks who are part of the GatewaySHED community - its just "what they do". But whether they are formal or informal "volunteers" - , - and GatewaySHED - wouldn't be what it is without the incredible effort of so many people - putting in time to open and run the Shed, buy stuff, clean and repair stuff, sort the teas etc etc.
It's fun - and a privilege - to be a part of!
THANK YOU to all our members and involved in GatewaySHED

We're really pleased to have been able to support The Secret Garden Leek with a Bug Hotel. A huge congrats to our Shedders for pulling this off and supporting another great local community group. If you've not discovered their site yet - we really recommend a wander and a sit next time you're in town.

A huge thanks to all staff and customers of Leek Building Society for your support. Your fundraising will enable the Shed to buy a new lathe to enable more of our members to undertake woodturning. A huge thanks 😊

A big thank you to everyone who got involved in our Easter fundraiser at our St Edward Street branch in support of GatewaySHED. Together, you helped raise an amazing £445.60!

Our ‘Guess the Name of the Bunny’ competition brought plenty of smiles, with the winning name revealed as… Biscuit.

Your support makes a real difference to local organisations like Gateway Shed, and we’re so grateful to everyone who took part.
