Mary started volunteering at Maggie's after she retired from her nursing role.
She shares why she enjoys volunteering at Maggie's Yorkshire.

"I enjoy volunteering so much at Maggie’s as it’s allowed me to still be involved in healthcare to a degree after retiring as a nurse.

It’s good to be able to use some of my old skills and to feel as though I can make a difference to both Centre visitors, and to the staff."

With the help of wonderful volunteers like Mary, we can continue to provide our vital expert cancer support for people facing cancer, today, tomorrow and always.

Nicky started volunteering at Maggie's after her friend received support at the centre. Nicky welcomes people through the door and providing a friendly face for people living with cancer when they need it most.

Here she shares why she chose to volunteer at Maggie's Yorkshire.
"Maggie’s was there to support a very close friend of mine through her illness, and her husband and daughter.
I knew how much the centre meant to my friend and her family, and wanted to help the charity grow and spread awareness to enable other families to get the same incredible support.
I feel privileged to volunteer at such a wonderful beautiful place. I meet some very special amazing people & hopefully I bring some brightness into their day!"

With the help of wonderful volunteers like Nicky, we can continue to provide our vital expert cancer support for people facing cancer, today, tomorrow and always.

Gearalt has been volunteering at Maggie's Yorkshire for over 3 years, caring for all of the plants in our centre.

He shares why he decided to start volunteering with Maggie's:

"I started volunteering at Maggie’s in Leeds after my wife, Lynne, was diagnosed with bowel cancer. That was when we first discovered Maggie’s, just by St James’ Hospital.

During our visits, I noticed the plants needed a little TLC, and when I mentioned it to Amanda, she said they were looking for a volunteer. I agreed, thinking I’d help out for a year at most—but here I am, still caring for them well into my third year.

Maggie’s has become much more than a place to tend plants. It’s a true sanctuary, offering calm, comfort, and support when it’s needed most. The work the whole team do is nothing short of amazing and I feel privileged to play a small part in helping to keep the space welcoming.

If you ever need to visit, for yourself or with someone you care about, I’m sure you’ll leave with a sense of calm."

With the help of volunteers like Gearalt, our centres can continue to be a welcoming environment for anyone who visits us to access our our vital expert cancer support. Thank you.

Angie is one of Maggie's Yorkshire's newest volunteers, joining us earlier this year.
Here she shares why she decided to volunteer her time at Maggie's:

"I have a few friends who have visited Maggie's over recent years and they cannot speak highly enough of how they felt when they visited the centre and how it made such a difference to their overall treatment experience.

When I semi retired and found I had some spare time, it seemed the obvious place to apply to volunteer. It's a very calm, welcoming environment and everyone who works there is very welcoming and supporting, to everyone who visits and to volunteers.

I feel very privileged to be able to be part of Maggie's."

We can continue to provide our vital expert cancer support for people facing cancer today, tomorrow and always, with the help of our wonderful volunteers. Thank you.
