Gearalt has been volunteering at Maggie's Yorkshire for over 3 years, caring for all of the plants in our centre.
He shares why he decided to start volunteering with Maggie's:
"I started volunteering at Maggie’s in Leeds after my wife, Lynne, was diagnosed with bowel cancer. That was when we first discovered Maggie’s, just by St James’ Hospital.
During our visits, I noticed the plants needed a little TLC, and when I mentioned it to Amanda, she said they were looking for a volunteer. I agreed, thinking I’d help out for a year at most—but here I am, still caring for them well into my third year.
Maggie’s has become much more than a place to tend plants. It’s a true sanctuary, offering calm, comfort, and support when it’s needed most. The work the whole team do is nothing short of amazing and I feel privileged to play a small part in helping to keep the space welcoming.
If you ever need to visit, for yourself or with someone you care about, I’m sure you’ll leave with a sense of calm."
With the help of volunteers like Gearalt, our centres can continue to be a welcoming environment for anyone who visits us to access our our vital expert cancer support. Thank you.
