This is Chèlea 💜

Recently, she represented Getaway Girls at the People's Fund event, presenting our Harehills Safe Space project to local residents and helping secure funding for work that will support girls and young women at risk of exploitation.

Reflecting on the experience, Chèlea said:

"It was an honour to represent Getaway Girls and present our Harehills Safe Space project. Being selected to share this project was a real privilege and I’m proud to have contributed towards securing funding that will create safety, opportunities and empowerment for young girls."

At Getaway Girls, we believe girls and young women should have a voice in shaping the services and opportunities available to them. Chèlea's involvement is a brilliant example of that in action.

Thank you to everyone who voted for the project 💜

A big thank you to for kindly donating some new storage units to Getaway Girls 💜

Here's Nav, one of our Youth Workers, helping us put them to good use. Practical donations like this make a real difference behind the scenes, helping us keep our spaces organised, welcoming and ready for whatever each session brings.

We’re so excited to share that we are receiving funding through The People’s Fund!

Girls from our groups presented our project live at the event, speaking about why safe spaces and support for girls and young women in Harehills are so important. Meeting the inspiring Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime (DMPC) in West Yorkshire, was a highlight of the night ✨

The funding will help us develop Safe Space support at The Hills, our new Harehills base, through targeted groupwork and individual support for girls and young women at risk of exploitation.

We’re incredibly proud of the girls who represented Getaway Girls so brilliantly.

It was brilliant to stand alongside so many organisations doing important work across Leeds, and we’re so grateful to everyone who voted for us 💜

A huge thank you to Amreen at for a generous donation of over £300 to Getaway Girls 💜

The donation was raised through a raffle at the Leeds-based activewear brand’s launch event. Avancé Active is founded by women and rooted in empowering women.

This week, Amreen visited us at Getaway Girls:

“Supporting Getaway Girls felt like a natural choice because of the incredible work they do helping young girls across Leeds build confidence, develop life skills, and create opportunities for their future.”

It’s always especially energising receiving support from women-led businesses and organisations who believe in helping girls and young women thrive ✨

We’re proud to launch ‘Thrive In Education: A Charter For Girls And Young Women’ 💜

Created by Getaway Girls as part of the Charter was shaped by conversations with girls and young women across Leeds about what they really need to thrive in education.

Girls told us that thriving means more than grades. It means feeling:

✨ Supported
✨ Safe
✨ Heard
✨ Connected
✨ Treated fairly

The Charter brings those voices together into a practical call for schools and education settings to better support girls and young women.

This short clip is taken from a longer film narrated by Chelea, one of our amazing Getaway Girls, helping bring this work to life.

🎥 Watch the full film and explore the Charter on our website.

Last night, we celebrated the opening of Stand Strong, Be Yourself at Leeds Arts University 💜

This exciting collaborative exhibition, open until 20 June, brings together research, creativity and young women’s lived experience through art, poetry and animation exploring online objectification and resilience.

We’re proud to have contributed to this work alongside researchers including Dawn Woolley and colleagues, with creative workshops led by Paulette Morris, Denetta D3 Copeland and Marcia Brown, and support from our youth workers.

Ofcom identifies objectifying content as a major harm experienced by girls and women. This project helps bring those issues into public conversation in a powerful and accessible way.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. And if you’re in Leeds, we hope you’ll go and experience it.
