From Monday 1st to Sunday 7th June, we’re joining the national celebration of Volunteers’ Week, shining a bright and grateful spotlight on every person who gives their time, energy, and compassion to help our church and community flourish.
Every Monday morning, a lovely team of volunteers meets at St Paul’s to support Baby Basics - one of the largest networks of baby banks in the UK. Claire is part of the team who run the project, read below why she is so proud to be part of it.
Spotlight on a volunteer: Claire
Claire says: “Each week we’re given a list of how many Moses baskets we need to pack for mums and their babies. Every basket is jam-packed with love: nappies, sheets, clothes, a sleeping bag, muslins, towels, blankets, toys and a book. And we never forget Mum — she gets toiletries and, when we can, a little treat like lip balm or moisturiser.”
“We sort through donations together, creating piles of usable clothes, bibs, muslins, toys and more. Anything that needs washing gets washed, and anything unsuitable is taken to a charity shop so nothing goes to waste.”
“It’s honestly such a friendly, uplifting group. There’s always time for a cuppa, a chat, and plenty of laughter while we sort and pack. Although we meet every Monday from 9.30–11.30ish, there’s no pressure — each week we just say if we’re free. I enjoy it so much that I try to keep my Monday mornings free."
“We don’t usually know the full stories of the mums we’re helping, but we do know they’re in real need. Once we heard that a mum receiving a basket was living in her car after escaping domestic violence. Knowing we’re doing even a little something to help really does matter. That knowledge is what keeps this group turning up week after week”
“I feel incredibly lucky to have the time to volunteer and to be part of such a passionate, caring team.”
