BBF Charity

BBF Charity The Beryl Browne Foundation supports projects in the Leeds West Yorkshire with a particular focus on the African Caribbean community, also in The Gambia.

Who We Are...
The Beryl Browne Foundation supports neighbourhoods with a current focus on Leeds, West Yorkshire and the Gambia in Africa. The work we undertake focuses on the current practical and emotional needs of the community and we aim to provide simple, sustainable solutions and continue the work started by ‘Mother Browne’ in the 1950’s. UK Working...

Recent work in the UK has focused on

supporting groups of women from a range of ethnic minority backgrounds in the Leeds area – helping them to develop their confidence and to ‘open the door’ to access other training and support networks. The Essence Programme saw a number of women complete an informal course culminating in a celebration event in Summer 2014. All participants reported a profound improvement in their sense of self-worth and confidence to move forward – engaging with new learning opportunities and developing new skills. This significant project was joint funded by the European Social Fund and Skills Funding Agency. The Beryl Browne Foundation is named after an incredible woman who was born and raised in Nevis, West Indies, and who came to the UK in the late 1950’s. In the community of Leeds she became known as ‘Mother Browne’ and became a strong and well-loved community ‘pillar’ – offering support, advice and a nurture to those around her. She had strong moral values and clear vision – and people would come quite some distance to ask her advice or discuss their problems and issues with her. She was an inspiration to others, making a difference in the lives of individuals and neighbourhoods and the foundation was set up to honour her memory and continue her great work.
