People Matters

People Matters Over 50% of our staff are disadvantaged in some way. Nearly two thirds of our income is generated through contracts and trading.

People Matters supports people with learning disabilities, autistic people and people with other hidden disabilities to build independence, confidence, and access meaningful opportunities, so they can enjoy life in the same way as anyone else Established in May 2002, People Matters (West Yorkshire CIO, is a Leeds based charitable organisation that develops inclusive communities by bringing people

together to enjoy leisure, learning and employment. The focus of our work are people who experience disadvantage, particularly through learning and other disabilities or health issues, and who live within Leeds and the surrounding area. We create opportunities for people who are disadvantaged in the workplace to gain experience, to develop their skills and confidence, to explore their potential and to progress within the organisation. We are committed to sustaining the activities that people value by developing income streams from contracts and trading, and so lessen our dependence on grants. We are a social firm, as defined by Social Firms England. We are currently supporting approximately 250 people each year, both adults and young people from 11 years, to enjoy activities and experiences. This includes supporting individuals to enjoy activities of their choice; bringing people together in groups to make friends, go out socially, and learn new skills, and involving people in the running of the organisation through voluntary or paid work.

It’s been yet another busy week in Wellbeing group! Jacqui our resident digital inclusion officer has been introducing us to apps to help us look after our health and finances. Even us support workers have been taught a new thing or two! We also said hello 👋🏻 and welcome back James but a sad farewell to Louise who is now leaving our wellbeing group and moving on upstairs to gain more knowledge from jacqui on the digital stuff.
If you want more information on either our wellbeing group, digital inclusion or our Nourishing People programme then get in touch.

We are saddened to share that one of our members, Michael Norton, passed away last week after a period of illness.

Michael has been a valued member of People Matters for over 12 years. He will be remembered for his passion towards Leeds United FC, his competitive sporting endeavours and the love he showed for his guinea pigs, as well as the big heart he had for his friends and family.

His funeral will be taking place on Wednesday 9th September at 1pm at Rawdon Crematorium (Leeds Road, LS19 6JP). Followed by a Celebration of Life at Bramley Band Club (Elswick Terrace, LS13 2BG), to share memories and stories of Mike.

Anyone who would like to pay their respects to Mike and to say goodbye are welcome to attend, and the family have asked that if you own a Leeds Utd Shirt or a Leeds Rhino's shirt, please wear it. If not, please wear anything yellow, white or blue, rather than traditional funeral attire.

Michael will be greatly missed by everyone at People Matters, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and all those who knew him during this difficult time. 💙🤍💛

If you have any questions about attending the funeral or would like support to attend, please speak to a member of the People Matters team.

Looking great guys.

Earlier this month, we returned to Marrick Priory Outdoor Activity Centre in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Back in 2019, our visit was met with floods, but this year we were welcomed by glorious sunshine! The residential provided members with the opportunity to take part in a range of outdoor activities, develop friendships and build confidence, whilst making memories! big thanks to the The National Lottery Community Fund without your support this wouldn’t be possible 🙏

Good evening
In the well-being group today we were joined by Jacqui and her a couple of her Nourishing People members. Jacqui is our Digital Inclusion Co-ordinator and today she came to talk about the NHS app and how helpful it can be to easily make appointments with the GP practice or order repeat prescriptions without the need to call up the doctors. 📱
We also did some mindfulness 🧘 activities, breathing 😮‍💨 exercises and learnt about grounding for when we’re feeling stressed 😥.
We all felt abit more zen 😴 afterwards.
Enjoy your weekend and hopefully it will be a bit cooler.

🔵This week, our Members' Council had a meeting with People Matters trustee, Rebecca.
It was a valuable discussion where members shared their thoughts, experiences, and ideas on a range of topics that are important to them. Rebecca listened to their views and will be taking their feedback and suggestions to the next Trustees' Meeting!

At People Matters, we believe that the voices of the people we support should help shape the future of our organisation. Thank you to Rebecca for coming to see us!💙
