People Matters

People Matters Over 50% of our staff are disadvantaged in some way. Nearly two thirds of our income is generated through contracts and trading.

People Matters supports people with learning disabilities, autistic people and people with other hidden disabilities to build independence, confidence, and access meaningful opportunities, so they can enjoy life in the same way as anyone else Established in May 2002, People Matters (West Yorkshire CIO, is a Leeds based charitable organisation that develops inclusive communities by bringing people together to enjoy leisure, learning and employment. The focus of our work are people who experience disadvantage, particularly through learning and other disabilities or health issues, and who live within Leeds and the surrounding area. We create opportunities for people who are disadvantaged in the workplace to gain experience, to develop their skills and confidence, to explore their potential and to progress within the organisation. We are committed to sustaining the activities that people value by developing income streams from contracts and trading, and so lessen our dependence on grants. We are a social firm, as defined by Social Firms England. We are currently supporting approximately 250 people each year, both adults and young people from 11 years, to enjoy activities and experiences. This includes supporting individuals to enjoy activities of their choice; bringing people together in groups to make friends, go out socially, and learn new skills, and involving people in the running of the organisation through voluntary or paid work.

This week in our wellbeing group we were visited by Mark and Charity from Leeds Community Healthcare Teams Learning Disability Services. They came to discuss what should happen in your annual health assessment and even if you don’t have a learning disability then you can ask your doctor for an annual check up to make sure your in tip top condition! We are going to be discussing different health conditions over the next few weeks and how we can keep ourselves fit and healthy ! 🙂

Happy 😊 Monday !
Wow wow wow what a great start to the week. Today we began our first day of our She Rises course led by Natalie. The course is running for 7 weeks and it got off to a great start.

We also welcomed new people to the course that are not people matters members so it was wonderful to meet new people and invite them into the fold and hopefully we can introduce them to more of our other fabulous groups and hopefully build new friendship 😊

This week the wellbeing group took a trip to Ten Pin to do some bowling 🎳
This was a great way to boost morale and have some fun as a group as well as getting some exercise into those arms ! Some of our members decided to play pool or play on the arcade’s afterwards too but next week we will be back in Belle Vue Road as we have a visitor!
