As part of her HeadStart journey, trainee Orisa Pather is taking the lead on Kala – an exciting creative technology performance premiering at Light Night Leeds.

Recently, Orisa brought together the six artists behind the project for their first creative briefing, sparking conversations, sharing ideas and beginning the collaborative process that will bring Kala to life.

From leading artists and shaping creative vision to exploring every layer of project production, HeadStart is giving Orisa the opportunity to grow as a creative leader.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Ustad Shakir Khan with us in Leeds, sharing his knowledge and artistry with the next generation of musicians.

Over the past week, our Music Academy students have benefitted from dedicated 1-to-1 lessons, followed by an intensive next week (27-31st July) of learning through our Shivir sessions.

Ustad Shakir Khan will then continue as a special international tutor at our Summer School from 3–8th August, giving our aspiring musicians the opportunity to learn from one of the finest sitar maestros of this generation.

These are rare and invaluable opportunities to experience the guru–shishya tradition firsthand, where learning goes far beyond technique and becomes a lifelong journey of musical understanding.

For our music academy student Ikjot Kaur that journey has led to Delhi, India, where she is undertaking intensive Sarangi training with internationally acclaimed maestro Nabeel Khan —immersing herself in the traditions, discipline and artistry of Hindustani classical music at its very source.

This extraordinary opportunity has been made possible through the support of South Asian Arts-uk Future Talent Yorkshire Young Musicians and the unwavering love and encouragement of her mother. ❤️
