We have just completed another powerful prison-based workshop at HMP Leeds for professionals, focused on the impact imprisonment has on children and families.

We were incredibly fortunate to hear honest and insightful contributions from four prisoners, alongside valuable discussions with prison officers and the Governor. These conversations gave professionals a real insight into the experiences, emotions, and challenges families face when a loved one is in prison.

The feedback from the day has been amazing, and we are so grateful to everyone who attended, contributed, and engaged so openly throughout the session.

At the Inside Out Project, we are passionate about creating spaces that connect professionals with the realities children and families experience, helping build understanding, compassion, and better support systems for this often hidden group.

We are already looking forward to running more workshops at HMP Wealstun later this year and continuing to connect professionals, raise awareness, and be loud about the needs of children and families affected by imprisonment — and how the Inside Out service can support them.

Children affected by parental imprisonment are often one of the most overlooked groups experiencing adverse childhood experiences.

Research consistently highlights the long-term impact imprisonment can have on a child’s emotional wellbeing, education, relationships, and mental health — particularly when support is not available early.
At the Inside Out Project, we believe trauma-informed, relationship-based support is essential in helping children and families navigate the challenges associated with imprisonment.

By creating safe spaces, strengthening emotional resilience, and supporting healthy relationships, early intervention services can play a significant role in improving outcomes for children and reducing long-term social and emotional harm.

Supporting children affected by imprisonment is not just a family issue — it is an education, health, wellbeing, and community issue.

Collaboration between schools, early years settings, family services, and community organisations is vital to ensure these children are seen, heard, and supported.

Early years support is essential for children who have a loved one in prison.

When a child experiences separation through imprisonment, it can affect their emotional development, attachment, confidence, behaviour, and ability to feel safe and secure. For very young children, these experiences can shape how they understand relationships and the world around them.

That’s why early intervention matters.
Providing nurturing, consistent, and trauma-informed support during the early years can help children build resilience, strengthen emotional wellbeing, and develop healthy foundations for the future.
Every child deserves support, stability, and the opportunity to thrive — regardless of their circumstances.

Last week at the Inside Out Project was full of connection, creativity, and moments that mattered. 💛

From group activities and conversations to shared laughter and support, it was another reminder of how important safe spaces are for children and families affected by imprisonment.

Every session helps build confidence, trust, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of belonging — and we’re so proud of everyone who took part.
Here’s a little look at what we got up to last week. 📸✨

This work starts with relationships.

At Inside Out, we take time to build trust — with schools, with families, and most importantly, with children.

There’s no rush. We understand that this is deep, emotional work. It takes consistency, compassion, and safe spaces before a child feels ready to open up.

One day we might be making collages and simply getting to know each other. Another day, we may be gently exploring what to expect from a prison visit, how to maintain important relationships, or supporting families as they navigate what life looks like now — especially when contact isn’t appropriate.

We meet children where they are, at their pace.

We provide 1:1 support for children and families across West Yorkshire.
