Coverage of The Market Place charity's closure from The Yorkshire Evening Post this week. Despite the comments from West Yorkshire NHS Integrated Care Board and Leeds City Council they no longer commission any community based face to face counselling for young people.

There are telephone helplines, online counselling and crisis support services and they commissioned early emotional support services from a national charity rather than our comprehensive offer.

Counselling services are available in many (but not all) schools and colleges but for young people who cannot or would not access that support in education settings the public sector are no longer funding any community based counselling for young people in Leeds.

If you would like to raise this directly with the ICB please email:

[email protected] (accountable officer for NHS Leeds) and [email protected] (Chief Executive NHS West Yorkshire ICB)

If you would like to raise it with Leeds City Council please email:

[email protected] (Councillor Andrew Scopes, Chair of the Health Scrutiny Board) and ask him to look into the adequacy of young people's mental health support in Leeds - as our young people's voice and influence group did in August and September 2025

Thank you for your support over the last 36.5 years. We are updating our website for the last time today with a final closure message from our charity.

We firmly believe that in the next few years the NHS and Council will realise how much the free services we offered are needed by young people in Leeds. We won't be here to provide them, but hopefully the next time young people's mental health support is commissioned in Leeds free face to face counselling will become available again.

Here's one last look at the awesome view from the Drop In window.

With best wishes from all of us.

On World Mental Health Day we're noting again the loss of our vital services for young people in Leeds. Thank you to everyone who got in touch when we announced the closure of our charity to let us know the difference that support from The Market Place had made to you.

We created some word art from your comments which we're sharing here.

We're proud of our young people's voice and influence group HYVH (Have Your Voice Heard) who spoke at the full Leeds City Council meeting today.

They asked the Council's Health Scrutiny Board to look into the adequacy of young people's mental health support in Leeds, to identify gaps in provision and called for investment in longer term trauma informed counselling.

They spoke about the doubling of need for young people's mental health support since the pandemic and the lack of investment to meet that need.

They noted that it was appropriate that their deputation was made on World Su***de Prevention Day.

They highlighted the huge loss to the city's young people as The Market Place Leeds prepares to close after 36 years of work supporting tens of thousands of young people in Leeds.

You are ALL invited to say one final goodbye to The Market Place.

During this event, there will be moments for anyone to share their experience and what the Market Place means to them. You are welcome to share this yourself, or our host can share for you. We'll be collecting notes on the day, but if you’d like to bring something you have prepared in advance - especially if it’s a longer message then please feel free to.

With live performances from singers, rappers and poets, we reflect on how community, support and art have the power to save lives.

Thank you so much to The Wardrobe Leeds for holding this space for us and your support over this time.

Link to tickets will be posted soon.

We hope to see you there🙂
