🎻 Gabriel Fauré — Violin Sonata No. 1 in A major, Op. 13

Live at the Leeds International Piano Competition — Semi-Final

The very first bars of Fauré’s Violin Sonata No. 1 are a masterclass in instant atmosphere: bold, lyrical, and full of that shimmering French warmth. Written in 1875–76, this sonata marked Fauré’s breakthrough into the big leagues, praised for its long singing lines, refined harmonies, and emotional restraint wrapped in passion.

We couldn’t be prouder to shine a spotlight on The Leeds 2024 Winner, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko.

Critics have praised him as “a cultivated pianist, musicality with muscle artfully balanced”, with “elegant fingerwork, a tone unforced… leaving the trappings of showmanship to others.” And that’s just the start—his performances are described as having a knife-edge way with dotted long-short patterns in Schumann and a banquet of touch and imagination in Medtner’s Sonata romantica.

Jaeden embodies artistry, depth and humility — a rare combination. Leeds is proud to have him as our winner.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent, a cherished Patron of the Leeds International Piano Competition and a lifelong supporter of music and young musicians.

Her warmth, empathy and quiet grace touched generations of pianists, from awarding Radu Lupu the Gold Medal in 1969 to welcoming Murray Perahia in 1972, who would later follow her as Patron. She always brought dignity, kindness, and a true love of music.

Her Royal Highness will forever hold a special place in the history and heart of the Leeds International Piano Competition.
