"She’d probably tell me I was a lunatic! But I think she’d also be proud."

Just six weeks after his mum, Veronica, died, Leeds dad James Gordon took on an extraordinary challenge to say thank you for the care she received at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice.

"Honestly, if Wheatfields hadn’t been there, I can’t imagine what my mum would have gone through.”

On 30th August, James climbed Ben Nevis completely barefoot, raising more than £3,250 for Sue Ryder so far.

"I was expecting thunderstorms, but the weather was okay in the end. It was like mum was looking down on me and making it just a little bit easier.”

Inspired by both his mum and his late friend Dave, James pushed himself to his limits on the six-hour climb, overcoming pain, exhaustion and challenging terrain to reach the summit.

We are incredibly grateful for James' determination and support. Thank you for helping ensure we can be there for more people. 💙

A Leeds family will walk under the stars in memory of much-loved mum, daughter and sister Tamla Watson at Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Leeds on Saturday, 10th October.

Just months after Tamla died aged 56, her family and friends will come together as Team Tamla to remember her and raise vital funds for our palliative and end-of-life care.

Tamla received support at home from Sue Ryder’s specialist community team before spending her final days at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice.
Her brother James said: “Tamla loved family – it was everything to her. She loved throwing parties, cooking and making sure everyone was well fed and had a good time. She just loved getting everyone together.”

Reflecting on the care she received, James said Sue Ryder’s teams “managed the whole thing so compassionately” and gave Tamla and her family the support they needed.

“I think the Starlight Hike will mean a lot to all of us,” James said. "These events are a chance to get together and focus on trying to do something positive in their memory.

“It’s an excuse to get together and talk about her as well. It’s about reliving those memories and remembering the good times."

This has been an annual event for the last four years and we love seeing the choir sing their hearts out each year.
