Not just a walk, but an act of generosity.

Fantastic supporters recently took part in The Great Leeds Walk, raising an incredible £4,708 for our vital palliative care and bereavement support services.

Team Sue Ryder set off from Leodiensian Rugby Club, choosing from 10, 18, and 25-mile routes and enjoying the beautiful scenery of Leeds in the sunshine.

Michael Tarbatt, Regional Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, said, “We were delighted to be invited by our friends at Overlimits to be part of this year’s Great Leeds Walk, and we’re so grateful to everyone who chose to support us.” 💙

Six years after the death of his wife Gemma to cancer, our amazing long term supporter Ricky Moore took on Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, in her memory.

Ricky took on the 12,389ft climb with Gemma’s close friend Sarah Brown, reaching the summit at sunrise on 22nd July, exactly six years since Gemma died, aged just 39.

Gemma spent ten weeks our care. During that time, hospice staff helped fulfil one of the couple’s final wishes by arranging their wedding – a moment of joy at the hardest times of their lives.

“Sue Ryder turned it around in two days,” Ricky said. “They organised a priest, decorated a special room and even arranged Gem’s hair and makeup. She looked amazing.”

Since Gemma’s death, Ricky has taken on a fundraising challenge every year for Sue Ryder, raising more than £23,000 himself as part of over £75,000 raised by family and friends in Gemma’s memory.

From climbing Scafell Pike and Snowdon to hiking the Hollywood Hills dressed as Hulk Hogan, Ricky says fundraising gives him a way to keep talking about Gemma and honour the promise he made to support the charity forever.

“I’m not going to let time take away that memory.” he said. “People might expect a hospice to hold difficult memories, but for me Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice is also the place where Gemma and I shared some of our best memories, including our wedding, but also watching films, playing games and spending meaningful time together.”

Cow-abunga! 🐄 A huge 246 thrill-seekers took on Sue Ryder’s annual Zip the Cow fundraiser in Ilkley, raising an incredible £35,000 to support our palliative, end-of-life care and grief support.

Held at the iconic Cow and Calf Rocks, the sell-out event saw brave fundraisers walk or ride to the top of the famous ‘Cow’ before soaring 270 metres over the Wharfe Valley at speeds of up to 35mph, in daylight and at this year’s new sunset option.

Among the zippers was Joan who took on the moo-mental challenge to celebrate her 90th year. She said: “It was such a perfect day. I really enjoyed it, an amazing experience, and I would highly recommend anyone thinking of participating. Go for it, have some fun and help a good cause.”

What a paw-some day in Ilkley as around 50 dog lovers and their furry friends gathered for the inaugural Paws for Manorlands charity dog walk, raising an incredible £1,605 for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice.

Organized by the Ilkley Manorlands Fundraising Group, this walk took place in memory of Anne, a local mum who we cared for. It followed the popular Three Bridges Walk, and was a wonderful morning of walking, chatting and socialising with fellow dog lovers and their canine companions. To add a fun twist, a dog-themed quiz entertained walkers of all ages.

Join us for the inaugural Brontë Pub Walk on Saturday, 15th August and immerse yourself in the breathtaking countryside that inspired the iconic Brontë sisters. Choose between our scenic 5-mile or 10-mile routes, featuring delightful refreshment stops along the way.

Starting in Stanbury, then strolling through Ponden and the outskirts of Oakworth before finishing on the iconic Haworth Main Street, it’s the perfect day out for families, friends, and coworkers! With eight refreshment points on the full route and six on the shorter one, you’re in for a social and relaxing adventure.
