Dementia diagnosis is too slow.

On average, people wait 3.5 years from first symptoms to a diagnosis, missing vital opportunities for early help.

There are a lot of reasons why getting a dementia diagnosis can take so long.

Stigma and a lack of understanding of symptoms means people don’t always go to their GP straight away.

And when they do, four in five GPs said they often encounter patients with signs of dementia who are reluctant to discuss it.

With no national system to ensure early memory problems are followed up and monitored, warning signs for progression to dementia can be missed.

Access to diagnosis often depends on where you live, with service variation and workforce pressures having an impact.

There is also limited diagnostic infrastructure.

The system is failing people at every stage - symptoms are missed, diagnosis is delayed, and support often comes too late. In the meantime, dementia progresses - stealing time, independence and dignity.

https://www.facebook.com/share/1BSsJWpiL8/ 6 facts about Dementia

Dementia affects us all.

Its cruelty overwhelms those living with it.

But It doesn’t just affect families and individuals with dementia.

It takes its toll on the economy, the NHS and our health and social care systems.

Did you know that?

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer

In the UK someone develops dementia every 3 minutes.

1 in 3 people born in the UK today will go on to develop dementia in their lifetime

Around 1 million people in the UK are living with dementia.

1.8 million people in England provide care for someone with dementia

At least one in three people with dementia don’t have a diagnosis.

Only together can we beat dementia – by giving vital support to those who need it, funding groundbreaking research, and campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be.

Dementia Friendly Horsforth are pleased to announce our new Patron, local broadcaster, and journalist Andrew Edwards.
Andrew hosted BBC Radio Leeds breakfast show for 15 years, every morning at 6am from 1995 until 2010.
Andrew has also hosted several other radio shows and, for many years, taught radio journalism, and production at UK universities, also lecturing here in Horsforth at Leeds Trinity University!
Andrew also has experience of what it is like to have a family member living with Dementia. In 2018, his own mother was diagnosed.
Andrew has worked widely to raise awareness of Dementia and worked with many organisations in the sector.
In 2019, he began a weekly audio diary broadcast called ‘Mum and me’ to record the journey he was going through with his mum and her Dementia experience.
This had a massive impact and led to him in 2021, being awarded a Dementia Hero Award by the Alzheimer's Society for this and the rest of the amazing work he has contributed to awareness around Dementia.
Last year, Andrew hosted an event organised by Leeds Older People’s Forum at Pudsey Civic Centre, where he met our Chairman, Chris. Impressed by Andrew’s work, Chris suggested to the Dementia Friendly Horsforth Team that Andrew become the new Patron of our organisation. It was unanimously decided that he should be invited to accept the post.
Andrew attended and hosted our event during the reopening of the Ballroom above Horsforth Community Hub in September 2025, and we look forward to having him add his support to our events in the future and work alongside us as we continue to raise awareness of Dementia in Horsforth and the surrounding area.
