100 years ago (2nd June 1925) Barwick also raised its freshly painted Maypole, and the Maypole Queen that year was Nellie Stead. Here she is with all her attendants, also an extract from our journal, Barwicker number 68, which included a full report on the 1925 Maypole raising.
Good luck to this year's festival and thanks to all involved in organising and keeping this historic tradition going.

The Barnbow Public House in Cross Gates (previously The Manston), lays mostly in the township of Austhorpe which was in the ancient Parish of Whitkirk, but a small part on the west side lies in the ancient Parish of Barwick-in-Elmet. The boundary is roughly the east side of Manston Park. It was originally built by a local landowning family, the Atkinson's, in the 1840s and has been extended and altered over the years. In this survey of Barwick, dated 3rd August 1841, it is stated that "Mr. Atkinson, is building a large dwellinghouse &c part of which is in this Township."

Barwick and Scholes are very Royal places. The Manors were owned by the Crown through the Duchy of Lancaster from 1399 until 1628 when King Charles II sold them to pay his debts. Scholes has the Coronation Tree planted in 1902 for King Edward VII, the 1977 Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Clock on the old Council offices (sadly broken) and the 1935 Jubilee Garden of King George V and Queen Mary (now renamed the WI Garden). Here are the title pages to surveys taken in 1610 when still in Royal hands.

Local history is never easy! In the past preserving records of our Parish was not high priority as this, delicate, example from 1745 of a Manor Court Book from Barwick and Scholes shows! Luckly they are now cared for by the West Yorkshire Archive Service.
