Day Two will bring together activists, scholars and community voices for two powerful conversations:

Resisting the Death Worlds: Livability Before and After Papers, which will explore precarity, survival and what it means to build a liveable life within hostile systems.

Moving the Centre: Resistance and Repair, which asks how we shift whose voices and knowledge are centred, and what resistance and repair can look like in practice.

On Thursday 8th October, Day Two of Psychic Tombs: Memory, Migration, Resistance and Repair will bring together activists, academics and community voices to think collectively about what comes after remembrance.

Through conversations, art, testimony, archive material and community contributions, we’ll be exploring how we move from grief and harm towards resistance, repair and more liveable futures.

At the heart of the day is a simple but important question: how do we move the centre in practice?

As part of Day One of Psychic Tombs: Memory, Migration, Resistance and Repair, we’ll be screening Europe’s Immigration Disaster.

The film documents the aftermath of the 2013 Lampedusa tragedy, when hundreds of people lost their lives attempting to reach Europe.

The screening will open into a wider day of reflection on migration, borders, colonialism, memory and the systems that continue to place people in danger.

It will be followed by a keynote lecture from Meron Estefanos of the DAIR Institute, as well as collective conversations with activists, academics and community voices.

This October, the Racial Justice Network (RJN), in collaboration with the Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies (CERS), Leeds Migration Research Network (LMRN) and the MIGMOBS research project, will host two days of art, film, testimony and community conversation inspired by the work and legacy of Professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o.

Taking place in the month marking the 2013 Lampedusa tragedy, the programme will explore Ngũgĩ’s concept of the “Psychic Tomb”; the memories, histories and traumas of slavery, colonialism, displacement and forced migration that continue to shape the present.

📍 Day One - Wednesday 7th October
Day One will centre remembrance, migration and the lives behind the numbers, with a keynote from Meron Estefanos of the DAIR Institute, a screening of Europe’s Immigration Disaster, and reflections from activists and scholars.

📍 Day Two - Thursday 8th October
Day Two will move into a more participatory community space, bringing together artists, activists, scholars and community voices to explore the unaddressed weight carried within our communities, and Moving the Centre as a practice of resistance, repair and collective possibility.

Across both days, there will be art, storytelling, community contributions, shared food and space for collective reflection.

We are saddened and enraged by the death of Professor Jason Arday. A peer, friend and former trustee of the Racial Justice Network.

Jason was a deeply valued member of our community whose scholarship and advocacy confronted racism, exclusion and inequality within education and beyond. His loss will be felt profoundly by those who knew, loved and worked alongside him.

We send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this devastating time.

Our most recent blog post features an intimate commemoration and reflection as we approach the first anniversary of the transitioning of our late Comrade, Dr Pious Nyandoro.

The piece reflects on his passing as a symptomatic failure of a system that continues to shape whose lives are seen as worthy of dignity, protection, and remembrance. It forces readers to ask questions such as: How has Europe succeeded in presenting itself as the global guardian of democracy and human rights while simultaneously operating one of the world's most repressive, hostile immigration regimes? In addition to asking readers to question whether we have become so institutionalised in the management of suffering that we no longer recognise the need to challenge the political systems that drive and perpetuate it?

Most pointedly, the blog calls on us to continue the work to which our Comrade Dr Nyandoro devoted his life: truth-telling, political education and collective resistance.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us in celebrating the Racial Justice Network's 10th Anniversary ✨

We are incredibly grateful to have shared this milestone with so many of you. Seeing friends, supporters, collaborators, community members, and partners come together to reflect on the past decade of our work made the celebration all the more meaningful.

As we look back on 10 years of organising, movement-building, learning, and collective action we are filled with so much gratitude for all that has been achieved and for the many people who have helped shape this journey.

We wanted to give a special thank you to our artists, performers, speakers, community stallholders, volunteers, and everyone who contributed their time, energy, and creativity to make the day possible.

Here's to the relationships, struggles, victories, and solidarities that have brought us this far and to the work that still lies ahead🥂
