Leeds’ bold biennial of live art returns for its eighth edition. Throughout November, eight projects will activate spaces around Leeds that invite, that involve, that interact.

From major installations to one-to-one encounters, from trade markets to gallery halls, the artworks in this year’s festival hope to connect audiences to new ideas, new people, and new ways of thinking about their city.

Help us build a paper model of Leeds this summer & be part of Compass Festival 2026!

Over the coming months, Compass & Action Hero are inviting local residents to help us construct 2000 miniature paper buildings, all based on the architecture of our city.

We’ll be popping up in community spaces, libraries and schools across Leeds to deliver a summer of free paper-modelling workshops led by local artists Ed Thompson () Mahshid Alavi () and Michaela Lesayova ().

Come and sit with us, watch the replica city emerge, try your hand at a new craft and learn more about our project.

A huge thank you to our architect partners, who have generously donated their time to design the paper models:

And thank you to , & for helping us bring From Ashes to every corner of the borough!

📢New Project Announcement: LSRPG

Our latest project at Compass will build a brand-new table top game, based on real people and places in Leeds, and made by Leeds residents.

👾Created by Leeds-based artists Jack Sibley () and Matt Allen (), the game will be developed through public workshops, giving local audiences a chance to provide legends, anecdotes, myths, overheard tales, and unreal memories to the game’s narrative — through this process, our city will become a playable, collaborative experience.

Free workshops are taking place in Farsley and Pudsey, for participants to come along, create, test, and build the game. You don’t need to be an expert in game building – just someone who enjoys making, world-building, local history, or trying something new!

Help us build a paper model of Leeds this Thursday !

Compass and are constructing 2000 paper buildings for an event at Compass Festival in November 2026, and we need your help!

Local architects 3xa Design, Page Park, Bauman Lyons, Whitby Wood & KPP have designed paper models of Leeds’ houses, shops & iconic landmarks.

Over the next 6 months, we’re inviting Leeds residents to construct a miniature city through a series of paper-modelling workshops hosted in libraries & community centres.

We’re kicking the first workshop off at this year’s UKREiiF, an unmissable opportunity to get property developers & investors involved in a community-led, speculative approach to urban regeneration and sustainability.

Come and find Compass and , Leeds-based community artist & founder of Doodle Chat CIC, at HATCH Networking (8.30-11am).

More info here: https://2026.ukreiif.com/programme/?dates=2026-05-21

From next week, the first round of From Ashes workshop locations will be announced on Compass’ website & socials!

A huge thank you to UKREiiF for supporting this project!

To commemorate the Sounds Like Home: Listening Gardens project, Alisa Oleva has commissioned a collection of reflective texts, with contributions from Bill Dietz, Nele Möller and Compass’ own Jennie Gilman, and beautifully designed by Dasha Podoltseva.

Listening Gardens was a continuation of a collaboration between Alisa and Dasha Zakharets, from Kamianske, Ukraine, and now based in Leeds. Over a month at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, Alisa facilitated a connection with Kamianske via an outdoor listening station designed by Soundcamp, live streaming audio from a twinned location thousands of miles away. The sounds were live streaming from Dasha’s cherished family cottage – a place she hasn’t been since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The soundbox was taken care of in Ukraine by Dasha’s parents – Oksana and Ivan Zakharets.
