Climate Action Leeds

Climate Action Leeds Climate Action Leeds: shaping a zero carbon, nature friendly, more socially just Leeds There are big challenges facing our city and big changes to be made.

Climate Action Leeds is an ambitious five-year programme funded by The National Lottery Climate Action Fund. Climate Action Leeds provides a platform for people, organisations and communities to come together to take action on climate change, in Leeds and beyond. Our collective purpose is to help shape a Leeds which is zero carbon, nature friendly and socially just by the 2030s. Our approach is fo

cused on mobilising communities, campaign groups and sectors to plan and act together. Over 40 groups in Leeds contributed to planning the project, and it is supported by many more. We started out in 2020 as the Climate Emergency Community Action Programme (CECAP), and re-named as Climate Action Leeds in 2021. We hope to inspire every single Leeds resident to take action on climate change - now is the time. We see positive change happening through a three pronged approach of 'Learn, Act, Build'. Find out more about how we see change happening: https://www.climateactionleeds.org.uk/how-change-happens

Climate Action Leeds has a clear set of shared values and principles that guide our actions and decisions. We don't know it all. We understand that this is an ongoing process of learning and unlearning, listening to each other, reflecting together, and finding new ways to understand and act out our values together. We believe in building power and capacity amongst communities to act and develop their own solutions. We are committing to being open, transparent and inclusive so everyone can participate - that means welcoming people of all ages, genders, colour, disability, religion and culture. We recognise climate injustice, and act in solidarity with communities who are least responsible for climate change and who are experiencing its impacts the most. For anyone who wants to support something good with a few hours of their time - Beeston Festival is on June 27th and they still need volunteers!

CAL had a presence at last year's festival thanks to Our Future Beeston, and it was a fantastic event with loads of activities for kids, interesting stalls, and delicious food.

This year's theme is "Leeds 400", which definitely connects with the CAL Network's aims of contributing to a greener, fairer city for everyone in Leeds.

If you can help, or know someone who can, head to the Beeston Festival page to see what volunteering role would suit you best.

We still require volunteers to sign up for our event. If you can spare a few hours during the day please get in touch with us!

We had a great time at Leeds International African Arts Festival!

Now in its fourth year, the 2026 edition focused on "connect with nature". Events included an Afrikan market and photo exhibition (as part of PHOTO NORTH festival at Slung Low, and a bat walk at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

Big thanks to Soaring with Didi for inviting us so we could listen and speak to attendees about how CAL can work with community groups across Leeds.

Thanks also to Kelechi for dance leadership, Kemi and Tobi for a heartening nature photography workshop, and Cesyl Catering for delicious food.

After the recent heatwave, many of us are wondering if there's anything we can do to stay cool at home during the summer.

This FREE event in Harehills offers all sorts of information, advice, and time for community members to share their experiences and suggestions, as well as free food.

It's especially important given that research from Leeds Beckett University and UCL found: "Climate change is placing Harehills at risk of being 5% hotter than other parts of Leeds," due to the type of housing and population density in the area.

Organised by Harehills Neighbourhood Forum and CADENCE (Consequence of Adaptation for Democratic Advance), this event runs 11 - 3 on Saturday June 27th at the Compton Centre. Children are welcome with a supervising adult.

Please sign up via Eventbrite to help the organisers cater for numbers and dietary preferences: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/beat-the-heat-tickets-1990052767398
