✈️ WHAT A START FOR OUR NEW RECRUIT FLIGHT! 🇬🇧

A full-on day at 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron for our newest recruits — and they absolutely smashed it!

We got the mandatory training out of the way early:

🔥 Fire Training
🚨 An impromptu fire evacuation drill
🌡️ Climatic Injuries
🔐 Security Training

Then it was on to the more enjoyable side of squadron life, getting stuck in, working as a team and starting their journey with the RAF Air Cadets.

A massive well done to our new Recruit Flight. This is just the beginning, and we’re looking forward to seeing every one of you develop, take on new challenges and reach your full potential.

🏆 BRONZE LEADERSHIP SUCCESS! 🏆

A big congratulations to Cadet Driscoll, who was presented with his Bronze Leadership Badge following the successful completion of his Bronze Leadership training conducted at 208 (North Leeds) Air Training Corps👏

The award recognises the development of key skills including leadership, teamwork, communication and planning — all important qualities as cadets progress and begin taking on greater responsibility within the Squadron.

Cadet Driscoll continues to make excellent progress at 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron, getting involved in the opportunities available and building his skills along the way.

🎉 PROMOTION NEWS AT 168! 🎉

A huge congratulations to Cpl Jordan, who has successfully been promoted to Sergeant at 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron! 👏

During his time as a Corporal, Sgt Jordan has already demonstrated leadership, initiative and a willingness to take responsibility, particularly through his work helping to run the Squadron canteen. His efforts have shown that he is prepared to step forward, contribute to Squadron life and support both cadets and staff.

Promotion to Sergeant brings greater responsibility within the Squadron, including helping to lead and develop our junior cadets and setting the standards expected of our NCO team.

We look forward to seeing Sgt Jordan continue to develop as a leader and make the most of the opportunities his new rank will bring.

🎓✈️ A Tale of Two Halves at 168 ✈️🎓

Friday night’s parade was a mixture of pride, celebration and a little sadness as 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron said farewell to Cadet Warrant Officer Bowskill, who is leaving us to begin the next chapter of her journey at Durham University.

CWO Bowskill has been a tremendous asset to the Squadron and has played an important part in helping to shape, support and develop many of our cadets. Throughout her cadet career, she has grabbed every opportunity with both hands, throwing herself into the wide range of activities and experiences available through the RAF Air Cadets.

One of the highlights of her final year was being selected to represent South & West Yorkshire Wing, alongside CWO Jones from Pudsey Air Cadets (2387 Squadron), on the International Air Cadet Exchange to the United States 🇬🇧🇺🇸 — a fantastic achievement and fitting recognition of her commitment to the organisation.

Her dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to 168 will be greatly missed by both the cadets and staff team.

However, the evening also marked an exciting new chapter for another member of the Squadron. As one of her final duties as our Cadet Warrant Officer, CWO Bowskill had the honour of presenting Cpl Jordan with his new Sergeant rank slides during final parade.

👏 Congratulations to our newly promoted Sgt Jordan!

And to CWO Bowskill — thank you for everything you have given to 168 Squadron. We wish you every success at Durham University and in whatever comes next.

🌅 Drill Preparation for Remembrance Sunday 🇬🇧

A stunning sunset provided the backdrop at 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron as our cadets worked on their drill in preparation for this year’s Remembrance Sunday Parade.

Remembrance is an important part of the RAF Air Cadets calendar, and our cadets are putting in the time and effort to make sure they represent the Squadron and the wider RAFAC with the respect and standards the occasion deserves.

Plenty more practice to come before the big day — but what an evening to be out on the parade square! 🌅

🇬🇧 WHAT A WEEKEND FOR 168! 🥾🏹 - Part 2 !

On Sunday, Sgt Harrison was back out again, completing another 15 km !

Sunday also saw the Wing Archery Competition take place at Wing HQ in Castleford, supported by Plt Off Ashworth and CI Rowlands.

Representing 168 were:

Under 16s

Over 16s
🏹 Sgt Bowers
🏹 Cdt Sawenha

Considering our cadets had experienced just one archery session at squadron before entering the competition, they produced a fantastic result, finishing 6th overall against squadrons where archery already forms a regular part of their training programme.

There was also success in the staff competition, with Plt Off Ashworth achieving joint 3rd place. 🥉🎯

But weekends like this aren’t really about medals, badges or where you finish.

They’re about taking part, getting involved and saying yes to opportunities.

One of the best things about being an Air Cadet is having the chance to try activities you might never otherwise experience. You never know — something you thought you wouldn’t enjoy could turn out to be your next passion!

Although speaking personally… definitely not road marching for me! 😂🥾

A fantastic weekend of sport, music, shooting, road marching and archery, and another example of just how much is available to our cadets when they get involved.

🇬🇧 WHAT A WEEKEND FOR 168! 🥾🏉🎯 - Part 1

It’s been a very busy weekend for the cadets and staff of 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron, with our team getting involved in activities right across South & West Yorkshire Wing.

On Saturday, cadets from 168 were out supporting the RAF Rugby Team at the RAF v Army match. Flight Sergeant Wright, after plenty of practice on the bell lyre, joined Pudsey Air Cadets (2387 Squadron)Marching Band, who had the honour of performing the National Anthem, along with a number of musical pieces before the match. Our cadets were supported on the day by CI Rowlands. Congratulations to the RAF Rugby team for the Win !

Meanwhile, our OIC and Deputy Wing Shooting Officer, Pilot Officer Ashworth, was at Strensall Ranges supporting the Wing’s L98 live firing activity, alongside 10 dedicated members of staff.

It was a successful day on the ranges, resulting in:

🏆 5 Blue Shooting Badges
🥉 2 Bronze Shooting Badges
🎯 Multiple CLF passes

Cadets are taught weapon handling skills as part of a structured programme of supervised training, with a strong emphasis on the safe, responsible and disciplined use of the r***e. Before taking part in live firing, cadets must complete the required training and demonstrate the necessary weapon handling standards.

And while all that was happening, Sgt Harrison was supporting the Wing Blue Road Marching Weekend, covering a mere 24 km on Saturday across two courses… before apparently deciding her legs hadn’t had enough punishment! 😂🥾

✈️ A NIGHT OF FIRSTS AT 168 ✈️

It was a special parade night at 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron, with plenty to celebrate and a number of firsts for our cadets.

Following their recent flying experience, First Flight Certificates were presented to:

Cpl Jordan
Cdt Driscoll
and our newly promoted Cpl West 👏

For some, it marked their very first experience of taking to the skies with the RAF Air Cadets — an opportunity they will hopefully remember for a long time.

The evening also gave us the chance to recognise Cpl West’s promotion, marking the start of a new chapter as a Junior NCO at 168.

From first flights to first stripes, it was certainly a night of firsts at 168!

✈️ 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron FLYING HIGH AGAIN! ✈️

Another fantastic opportunity for cadets from 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron as they took to the skies from RAF Leeming in the Grob Tutor.

For some, it was their first experience of military flying — kitted out in flying suits, helmets and parachutes before climbing into the cockpit and experiencing aviation first-hand.

Cadets had the opportunity to take control of the aircraft, experience the handling characteristics of the Tutor and see Yorkshire from a completely different perspective. Judging by the smiles and thumbs-up, it was an experience they won’t forget anytime soon!

This is what being an RAF Air Cadet is all about — real opportunities, real experiences and memories that last a lifetime.

A huge thank you to the Air Experience Flying staff at RAF Leeming for giving our cadets another outstanding experience.
