Priceless is the role of foster carers like Karen in the lives of young refugees. It is wonderful to see this particular story highlighted. Karen is one of the lovely carers, with years of experience in the field and joins Migration Yorkshire regional carers group. 🧡

If you are a carer and you would like to share and learn best practices around looking after unaccompanied children - then contact us [email protected]. We offer a free and informal space for carers and supported lodgings across Yorkshire and Humber to connect, network and be trained by our guest speakers who join the group.

Naj came to live with Calderdale Council Foster Carer, Karen, and her son Blake in 2016. Now an adult, in full time employment, Naj continues to live with Karen and Blake and is very much part of the family.

Karen says:

“Naj was 13 when he came to live with myself, and my birth son Blake was 7. He spoke no English when he came here and now has a full-time job and is training to be a manager. Naj still lives with me now and says he has no plans to move out.”

Naj says:

“I would have really struggled in my life without my lovely mum's help, she always looks after me with school, college and now work. I work as a swimming teacher and a lifeguard for the local authority. I’m grateful to have a mum like this for life. We are very happy family. Blake is my little brother. I love my dog and all my family. It is good that we help others, and I can help them as I know how they feel. Anyone is lucky who lives here."
