Last week’s publication of the Government’s new Health and Social Care Committee report on healthy ageing reinforces that staying active is fundamental to living healthier, more independent lives for longer.

The report highlights the significant role physical activity plays in preventing and delaying long-term health conditions, reducing health inequalities, and supporting healthier ageing across communities.

At Think Active, we work closely with partners, communities and organisations across Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire to help create the conditions that empower people to move more in ways that work for them.

Over the last few days, temperatures have been rising, and it’s more important than ever to take care of your body and stay hydrated. Hot weather can leave you feeling tired, dizzy, and drained without you even realising it. A few small habits throughout the day can help you stay refreshed, energised, and feeling your best this summer:

1. Start your morning with a glass of water
Before coffee or breakfast, give your body the hydration it needs after a long night’s sleep. It’s a simple way to wake up feeling refreshed and energised.

2. Enjoy more water-rich foods
Fresh fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and berries can help keep you cool while adding extra hydration to your day.

3. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty
Thirst is often a sign your body is already running low on fluids. Keep a water bottle nearby and take small sips regularly throughout the day.

4. Stay cool whenever possible
Spend time near a fan or in the shade when the heat feels intense. Giving your body a chance to cool down can make a big difference.

5. Include electrolytes when sweating a lot
If you’ve been outdoors, walking, exercising, or sweating heavily, electrolytes can help replace important minerals your body loses through sweat.

A gentle reminder to slow down, drink your water, and take care of yourself during the heat. Your body will thank you for it.

“I truly believe everyone should take part in this session… A little understanding goes a long way.” 🩷

Our Sport Welfare Lead Charlie Creed recently worked alongside Alzheimer’s Society, Bowls England and Active Together to deliver a Dementia Friends session at Leamington Bowls Club, welcoming members from bowls clubs across Warwickshire.

The session focused on deepening understanding of dementia and inspiring positive action within local communities.

Helen Lewis-Wall, Disability Officer at Bowls England, shared:

“Both of my parents lived with Alzheimer’s, and attending the Dementia Friends workshop helped explain many things I hadn’t fully understood before. It gave me clarity and a new perspective on their experiences.”

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped create such an open and compassionate conversation. 👏

At ThinkActive, we know that mental health matters every single day. 🩷

Life can feel overwhelming at times, but physical activity can play an important role in supporting our mental wellbeing.

Whether it’s going for a walk, moving your body outdoors, joining a local activity, or simply taking a few minutes to stretch and breathe — small moments of movement can help us feel calmer, happier, more connected, and more like ourselves.

It’s not about being the fittest or doing intense workouts. It’s about finding ways to move that feel good for you and making space to look after both your body and mind.

Be kind to yourself, take things one step at a time, and remember that every little bit counts.

Think Active is inviting organisations across Coventry to express their interest in joining a developing Physical Activity Partnership, bringing together a diverse range of partners who share a commitment to creating a healthier, fairer, and more active city.

We are keen to involve a broad and representative mix of organisations, recognising that meaningful and lasting change requires collaboration across sectors. We therefore welcome involvement from partners across Coventry, including health, local government, education, transport, housing, community safety, the voluntary and community sector, business, faith, culture, sport, and physical activity.

The Partnership provides an opportunity to collaborate across sectors, contribute to shared priorities, and support collective action to increase participation in physical activity and improve long-term health outcomes for Coventry residents. It will also support delivery of the recently adopted City of Movement strategy, building on progress made through previous Sport England investment and helping to shape how new Place Expansion funding is used.

We recognise that organisations will wish to engage at different levels, depending on capacity and interest.

Opportunities to be involved include:

✅ Receiving updates and staying informed about partnership developments
✅ Contributing insights, ideas, and feedback
✅ Participating in thematic discussions or task groups
✅ Attending wider partnership events and forums
✅ Taking on a leadership role in shaping and progressing key areas of work

Mental Health Awareness Week feels like the right time to shine a light on the power of connection 🩷

Groups like Men Walking and Talking are making a real difference - creating safe, welcoming spaces where men can talk, walk, listen and feel less alone.

What started with one person turning up in Telford has grown into something incredible, with thousands of men now taking part across the country. In Solihull alone, around 2,500 men have joined the walks over the last 80 sessions. 🚶‍♂️

One quote that really stayed with us was:
“Leaving the house is the hardest step. And then it just gets easier.”

Sometimes support doesn’t have to be formal. Sometimes it’s a conversation while walking round the park. Sometimes it’s just knowing someone will be there waiting for you.

A brilliant reminder this Mental Health Awareness Week of the difference community, movement and connection can make. To read more about Men Walking and Talking, follow the link: https://ow.ly/O7t950YYUNP
