We are set up at Leamington Peace Festival. We're here all weekend with info, merch, community, and a whole lotta queerness. Also, Dan is doing a peace talk on the main stage today at 11:30am and tomorrow at 12:00pm. He'll be talking about what peace looks and feels like for LGBTQ+ people and how everyone can be an ally.

Big thanks to the Peace Festival organisers for being so supportive and thank you to everyone this morning who has been positive and kind about what we do and how we've stood up to WCC's leader this week.

STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF WARWICKSHIRE PRIDE

Warwickshire Pride is deeply concerned by the statement issued by Councillor George Finch, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, regarding libraries, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and what he describes as "contested gender ideology."

At a time when LGBTQ+ people, and particularly transgender people, are facing increasing hostility, misinformation, and political targeting, it is disappointing to see the Leader of Warwickshire County Council adopt language that further marginalises members of our community.

Councillor Finch's statement presents the existence of transgender people and information about LGBTQ+ identities as a political ideology rather than the lived reality of thousands of people across Warwickshire. Being le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, or otherwise part of the LGBTQ+ community is not an ideology. It is not a political campaign. It is not a belief system. It is simply part of the rich diversity of human experience.

Libraries exist to provide access to knowledge, information, literature, and diverse perspectives. The suggestion that books or resources acknowledging LGBTQ+ people somehow undermine neutrality is both misleading and dangerous. Representation is not indoctrination. Inclusion is not political campaigning. Ensuring that LGBTQ+ people can see themselves reflected in books, educational materials, and public spaces is no different from ensuring that people of different faiths, ethnicities, disabilities, ages, and backgrounds are represented.

Warwickshire Pride is proud to work alongside Warwickshire Libraries through our LGBTQ+ book groups at Leamington Spa Library and Stratford-upon-Avon Library. These groups provide safe, welcoming spaces where people can come together to discuss literature, share experiences, and combat social isolation. They are a positive example of libraries doing exactly what they are intended to do: bringing communities together, encouraging learning, and fostering understanding between people from different walks of life.

We also want to express our full support and solidarity with library employees across Warwickshire. Library staff work tirelessly to provide inclusive, accessible services for everyone in our communities. They should not be subjected to political attacks simply for ensuring that library collections reflect the diversity of the people they serve. We thank them for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to making libraries welcoming spaces for all.

We are particularly concerned by the implication that information relating to gender identity and LGBTQ+ lives requires special scrutiny beyond that applied to other groups in society. Such rhetoric risks creating an environment where LGBTQ+ people are singled out, treated as inherently controversial, and excluded from public life.

Councillor Finch states that Warwickshire County Council should "inform and serve residents, not campaign at them." We agree. The Council's role is to serve all residents equally, including LGBTQ+ residents, transgender residents, LGBTQ+ families, and young people who may be questioning who they are. Public institutions should be places where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued.

History teaches us important lessons about what happens when politicians begin deciding which books, ideas, identities, or groups are acceptable in public spaces. The book burnings of N**i Germany stand as one of history's starkest warnings about the dangers of restricting access to information, suppressing diverse viewpoints, and targeting minority communities. While today's circumstances are clearly different, the principle remains relevant: public bodies should not seek to limit access to information simply because it relates to a minority group or because some people find it uncomfortable. Libraries should be places of learning, exploration, and understanding, not tools for political censorship.

Unfortunately, this latest statement does not exist in isolation. Warwickshire Pride believes that Councillor Finch's comments form part of a wider pattern of rhetoric that has targeted transgender people and contributed to hostility towards the wider LGBTQ+ community. As a result, Warwickshire Pride has submitted a formal complaint under Warwickshire County Council's Code of Conduct process regarding Councillor Finch's conduct and public statements. We believe elected representatives have a responsibility to uphold standards of respect, equality, and inclusion for all residents, particularly those from minority communities.

Warwickshire Pride therefore calls upon Councillor Finch to withdraw his statement and engage constructively with LGBTQ+ communities across Warwickshire. We also call upon him to reaffirm his commitment to serving all residents of our county equally, regardless of their s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or background.

As a public servant, the Leader of the Council has a responsibility to represent every resident of Warwickshire, not just those who share his personal or political views. Leadership requires bringing communities together, not singling out already vulnerable groups for political attention.

Warwickshire Pride remains committed to working with councillors of all political parties, public bodies, community organisations, library services, and residents to build a county where everyone is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.

Warwickshire Pride would welcome the opportunity to meet with Councillor Finch and the Council's leadership to discuss these concerns and ensure that LGBTQ+ residents continue to feel valued, represented, and safe within Warwickshire's public services. Meaningful dialogue, based on respect, evidence, and lived experience, is essential if we are to build a Warwickshire where everyone feels they belong and where no community is made to feel unwelcome or excluded.

We urge Warwickshire County Council to stand firmly on the side of inclusion, equality, evidence-based policy, and the rights of all residents to access information freely and without discrimination.

We are pleased to see the pride flag is being flown by Warwickshire County Council. We knew it was happening but needed to keep it quiet until it happened.

Recently our Chair privately met with the Chairman of Warwickshire County Council to discuss the pride flag being flown for Pride Month and options for where the flag could be placed and how long it could be up. We are pleased to see the Chairman has stood with LGBTQ+ communities and had the flag raised. Thank you.

Of course, Reform won't be happy about this. They will probably have something negative to say. But guess what... Reform changed the rules so that only the Chairman of Warwickshire County Council can decide what flags go up. It suited them when the Chairman was a Reform councillor. But following him being found out to be a slum landlord, he was replaced by a Conservative councillor. The current Chairman has exercised his right to raise the pride flag. So, really Reform should not have a problem because the rule they created has been followed.

Happy Pride Month.

We had a stall at Warwick Market Pride yesterday. It was a very wet and windy start but the sun came out and we enjoyed having many positive conversations with people.

We recorded 45 hate incidents at our stall, ignored every single one of them (they have been reported), and focused on letting people know about our festival, year round services, and raising funds to keep everything running.

We appreciate the love and support that was shown by so many people. While there were challenges, love outshines the hate, and we came away from the market grateful for the opportunity to be there in all our rainbow fabulousness.

Thank you to CJ's Events for inviting us.

Next up is Leamington Peace Festival. We have a stall there next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, with information and community and loads of pride merch. Come and say hi.

From our friends at Rugby Methodist Church.

In Pride Month Rugby Methodist Church Centre are holding a Pride Celebration on Sunday 21st June at 7pm.  This is a safe and inclusive space for LGBT+ siblings and allies to gather and celebrate our individuality and diversity, recognising that we are all made in the image of God, and God loves us just the way we are.  There will be singing, stories and refreshments with much glitter and sparkle!  For further details or if you would like to be involved in anyway, please contact Revd Nathan Falla at [email protected]

Southam has Pride!

We've been working quietly behind the scenes with Southam in Bloom and recently attended a meeting with their team to discuss Southam showing support for Pride Month.

They held a vote and everyone was in favour of putting up flags during Pride Month. We gave them some of our flags to keep and put up this month and every year.

Here is a pic of one of the flags flying proudly in Southam. It's great to see Pride Month being marked there for the first time, and at a time when we are trying to reach parts of Warwickshire where we haven't had a presence before.

Big thanks to the Southam in Bloom team and councillors in Southam for being so wonderful and lovely and supportive.

Thank you also to Whitnash Town Council for raising a rainbow flag for the start of Pride Month.

It's good to see that some councils are still supporting LGBTQ+ communities. It means a lot.

When a business wants to be involved with Warwickshire Pride, we follow a due diligence policy to check it's a business we want to be associated with.

Recently, Lloyds bank applied for our Pride March. They have taken part for the last few years. We approved their application at that time.

However, we have been sent an email that went to Lloyds staff stating a new rule that trans women must use men's toilets and trans men must use women's toilets.

Referring back to our due diligence policy and considering the ethos of Warwickshire Pride, Lloyds bank is now banned and will not be taking part in Warwickshire Pride events.

We stand against discrimination of trans people (and all other people). We will continue to strongly support trans communities and say no to anyone who is not for trans inclusion and providing basic dignity and respect to trans people.
