Abbee is one of our regular lead volunteers on the evening shift 💛 Here’s what she has to say about her time at LWS so far!
“I have volunteered at LWS for almost two years now as a shift lead. I usually work most Saturday nights. If I can't do a Sat because of other commitments then I usually come in on a different evening shift. I love working at the shelter for so many different reasons, but mostly it is because of the people that I meet and get to spend my time with.
It has really enabled me to build a sense of community, both with other volunteers (many of whom I now call my friends) and the guests that visit.
I have met so many brilliant people who are funny, kind, compassionate, caring, clever and creative...people who I would never have met in my other working life that I love learning from and spending time with. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of the LWS community, and even after a busy or challenging shift my heart is full - I have never regretted a moment I spend there.
For anyone thinking of volunteering (with us or elsewhere) I would say do it, you won't regret it.
It allows you to have new experiences, learn new skills (or put ones you have to good use), meet new people and find a fun way to spend any spare time you have.
Most of my family have volunteered here in some way too - my youngest son did his bronze Duke of Edinburgh helping the catering team before the shelter opens for guests, my oldest son worked there serving meals in his summer uni holidays, my husband collects donations sometimes and our wider family and friends do the reverse advent calendar - there are so many different ways you can be a volunteer, whatever your circumstances.
Even if you can only do a shift once in a blue moon, you will be helping out your local community and doing something positive for yourself too.”
