The BBRT had a busy day at Staffordshire County Show today, chatting to our farming friends old and new. Come along and see us there tomorrow too - we are upstairs on the balcony in Bingley Hall.

This is Walnut, a three year old, naturally polled Hereford bull. What are your thoughts on naturally polled Herefords versus horned? Is there a place for the polled Herefords in the rare breed system? Edit for clarity - Walnut is an OP British polled bull from the Awnells herd.

In July last year there were only 14 recorded large black Modern Langshan hens in the UK (and possibly the world). Thanks to the generosity of a dedicated breeder, a trio of these incredibly rare birds have been donated to Ferry House Rare Breeds and we will hopefully be breeding and showing these beautiful birds very soon.
This is rare breed conservation in action. If there is interest in hatching eggs or young birds, please let me know.

Revival Gabriel is now six months old and - after returning clear TB and Bluetongue results, is on his way to his new home where he will mature and hopefully take his place as a future sire of a new generation of Jersey calves. Gabriel is the BBRTs first embryo transfer calf and is 95/100% pure OP Jersey.
Thank you to Terry Mancey for expertly rearing him to this point, and to his new home for taking him forward.

Having a sort out of my Northern Dairy Shorthorn cattle. This bull has 3 years of calves so will need to move on. My herd is Cattle Health Scheme tested clear for BVD, IBR, Lepto and Johnes disease. As part of the sort out my best cow out of whom i have retained 3 daughters has been taken north to help in the production of Stonebeck Cheese made by Sally and Andrew Hattan in Nidderdale. A sad day in a way as she always came up to say hello but selective breeding from the more productive animals is the way forward with this breed to allow its return to a non rare breed niche. Still only 300-450 females left in the world up from 52 in 2008. Minimal help nor interference is needed . I cannot remember when i last helped a cow to calve in the last 10 years and only 2 before that with malpresentations. Here they are looking a little thinner than in a year when it has rained. Looking at the fold unit which is essential to stop Mr Fox eating my potter strain Light Sussex hens.

Many of our native breeds of poultry are in real decline. Some breeds are now restricted to a handful of breeders with numbers nationally in double figures. The risk of Avian Influenza lockdowns and the continuing ban on poultry shows in England is reducing breeding even further and -without shows- breeders are denied the ‘shop window’ on which they depend for new enthusiasts and breed sales. Particularly at risk are dual purpose regional breeds such as the Norfolk Grey and the Derbyshire Redcap.
Larger scale - free range flocks of these attractive, productive birds are almost unheard of. If you are considering hens - or have room for a few more - please think rare breed regional. We mustn’t lose them.
