Social Circles CIC is working to improve the prosperity, health and mental wellbeing of residents in rural Somerset, with a particular focus on the Somerset Levels & Moors. Our Objectives:

* Improve mental health and emotional wellbeing
* Create a sense of ‘taking control’ and increased ‘purpose’
* Provide opportunity for physical exercise and ageing well
* Reduce loneliness and isolation
* Impro

ve sense of ‘belonging’ and inclusion in wider community

We are a listening service so we truly understand the needs and wants of those we work with. Our Pathways ensure longer term support for those that need it, including signposting and referral to other services to improve lives and address the impact of poverty in all its forms

We acknowledge and promote the healing power of nature, and the benefits of nutritionally dense locally grown food to wellbeing and in building relationships, social capital and more resilient communities.

St Bartholomew’s Church at East Lyng was built by the monks at Athelney Abbey, which was founded in 879AD by King Alfred after he defeated Guthrum at the Battle of Ethandun in 878AD. He also ordered that East Lyng be fortified and the monks established the parish church to serve the local population.

Historian David Ross visits St Bartholomew's Church in East Lyng, Somerset, and its links to the Alfred Jewel.

The Vikings came to Somerset long before the clashes between Alfred and Guthrum.

In 836AD, King Ecgberht of Wessex fought around 1,500 Viking raiders arriving by longboat at Carrum (Carhampton) on the Somerset coast. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that “the Danes had possession of the battlefield.”

Seven years later, in 843AD, another battle was fought and lost there by his son Æthelwulf against another fast-moving coastal attack arriving across the Bristol Channel.

Carhampton may have been targeted because it was a West Saxon royal estate: “Scandinavian invaders, bent on conquest or on obtaining significant loot, massed their armies around such key centres.”

These little-known clashes at Carhampton were among the earliest major Viking battles fought in Wessex, decades before Alfred’s struggle for survival in Somerset in 878AD
