Defying Dementia

Defying Dementia Defying Dementia - Raising funds and awareness of the research taking place at Lancaster University into Alzheimer's and neurodegenerative brain disease.

Several years ago we developed a drug that blocks the formation of 'senile plaques' found in the brains of victims of Alzheimer's disease/dementia. This drug blocks the assembly of these plaques, along with their toxic effect, on brain cells. It is highly stable in the body and is tagged so it can cross the blood-brain barrier. The drug reduces the load of plaques present in cell models of the dis

ease, along with reducing inflammation and oxidative damage. Lancaster University was granted a patent for this technology, however the underlying lab work has reached the end of funding by Research Councils. Unfortunately, the drug does not yet have the high technology readiness level and low perceived risk demanded by the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, we are launching a crowd-funding campaign to raise money which will re-invigorate the stalled technology and ultimately get the drug into human clinical trials! This page has been created to promote our campaign and raise awareness of the research taking place at Lancaster University, so please 'like' us to be kept updated with our progress!

Dear followers

I'm not sure you are aware that, in addition to our main DD fund raising efforts, we also have a fantastic DD Student Society on campus at the University. They play a vital part in raising funds to enable a DD Student Society Summer Internship within our labs in the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences. As such, they are effectively funding the research of one of their peers and, hopefully, contributing to the DD ethos of fostering future dementia scientists (which is equally as important as funding current research in the battle against dementia).

The event is to be held at the Greaves Park on Sat 28th Feb (7 pm) so please do consider going along, having a good time and meeting our great Society members (ticket link below).

Tickets include a full buffet meal and entry to the ball. There will also be a silent auction. Tickets are available on the DD LUSU page, linked below.
