The Choral Society can trace its musical history back to 1835 when it was known as Lancaster & District Musical Society. Lancaster’s longest established 4-part choir, with around 60 singers, began jn 1835 when it was Lancaster & District Musical Society. LDCS celebrated our 175th Anniversary during 2011/12 with 3 concerts reflecting our past and looking forward to the future. We've performed a gr
eat variety of works from Mozart to Elgar, Brahms to The Beatles, as well as contemporary composers, Bob Chilcott, John Rutter, Karl Jenkins and Howard Goodall. Handel’s Messiah, normally performed every 3 years in the autumn was last performed by us in 2018, when Lancaster Priory was full to bursting! LDCS members have sung in several performances by the “Really Big Chorus” at the Royal Albert Hall (RAH) in London. In 2006, we sang in Verdi’s Requiem before our own large production at the Ashton Hall, Lancaster in 2007. In 2008, a group from the choir sang Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man after our own performance in the Ashton Hall Also, in July 2009, some of us participated in John Rutter’s Requiem conducted by the composer himself. In July 2010, around 30 of the choir performed Karl Jenkins’ Gloria at the RAH, which we brought to Lancaster for its Northern Premiere (literally, north of the Watford Gap) on 27th November! ln May 2011, a section of the choir sang in Wi******er Cathedral and Andover Priory, touring as Lancaster & District Chorale. For 2013, we arranged a similar tour of West Mercia at the end of May in Worcester Cathedral and Great Malvern Priory. In 2014, the Choral Society started performing regularly at Lancaster Priory as well as at the Ashton Hall, Lancaster, our home for many years. We've sung at The Grand- the choir's original home in the 19th century. In one concert there we supported Tenors Unlimited on their tour-which was a lot of fun and very different for us.
