Ruby met up with her Pearson’s brother Suli in Scotland on Monday. He’s 3 months younger than Ru and I’ve been in touch with his mum regularly for the past 3 years. It was really lovely to meet up in person and it felt like we were old friends. I’m so grateful to the joys of Facebook for connecting us in the first place. Our friendship has been a lifeline at times, there are no words but the understanding we share is so rare. Sulis clinginess felt so familiar, he’s had a rollercoaster few years and spent a lot of time in hospital, his kidneys are affected and he has a feeding tube which his big brother helped to feed him with. I watched him and ruby and felt a moment of sadness at the magnitude of what their disease means for them and all of us. We could both agree how much better things were now than in the early terrifying days, we’ve really grown into it.
We stayed at a gem of a place in the middle of nowhere called Bamff estate. It’s a re-wilding project and we got to see some Beavers, wild ponies, birds, pigs, cows, peacocks and a red squirrel. I was apprehensive as it wasn’t the usual holiday park but it turns out kids love stones (throwing stones, showing me stones and losing precious stones), sticks, having houses under big trees and waiting at dusk for the beavers to surface. The weather was the icing on the cake of course. We drank lots of iron bru, ate lots of crisps and visited some stunning places.
