A mother's tale of hope and resilience
The journey of Joseph that brought us here:
The battle with a 10-year drug and alcohol addiction, that dark shadow over our lives. It brought pain and despair, shocking us all to our core countless times. The tears, the heartache, the suffocating feeling that you cannot breathe, and the need to carry on—all while clinging to hope, knowing that my beautiful boy was still in there, somewhere, even as he slipped further away from reality.
Every day was a struggle. The lying, the stealing, the extreme self-harm—all driven by the overpowering need to get the next fix. The trauma was relentless, the inevitable custodial sentence that brought with it a crushing sense of shame and the constant questions: What else could I have done?
I imagined Joseph's funeral every single day, a heart-wrenching thought and imagination. Having to mask every single feeling, finding strength to protect the rest of our precious family. I hid behind a large smile, not letting anyone see the true story, navigating the whispers and finding solace in the kindness and friendships of others.
Despite the trauma, I will always be grateful to HMP Hewell, the harsh environment. It was there, in that place of second chances, that a glimmer of hope began to emerge.
Today, I am happy to say the custodial sentence is over, and the journey of healing has begun. The lifetime of repair will take time, but I will never give up hope. Each tender step forward is a victory, and I am proud beyond belief of my son, who is now ‘clean’. Joseph is slowly but surely returning to the beautiful soul we all know and love.
Joe, you have shown immense courage, and with every single minute, you are reclaiming the person you were always meant to be.
In your (almost) 27th year, with a lifetime already lived, you can now hold your head high. Remember to stop and look up, take a deep breath, and tell your story to help others. Your journey is a testament to resilience and the power of never giving up.
Love you, Mum
