The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation

The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation When the charity first started, our work to address the legacy of conflict was focused on landmines and the explosive remnants of war.

The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation is a UK registered charity (no.1140911) for victims of conflict that was founded in 2011 by football legend Sir Bobby Charlton. This took the form of: developing new technologies that would make the removal of landmines quicker and safer; mine risk education for the most vulnerable communities where the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to thr

eaten lives on a daily basis; and work to improve surgical techniques and prosthetics for those who had suffered explosive blast injuries and limb loss. This work continues today and has delivered some impressive results. However, following a review in 2017 we have recognised that there is more we can and must do to support conflict affected communities more directly. As a result of listening to our beneficiaries & partners, and studying the impact of war on civilian populations, we now work more holistically on conflict recovery and take an asset based approach to those we aim to support. We have added humanitarian and development projects to our programmes and now conduct a wider range of training for conflict affected communities. One of the key mechanisms for delivering these interventions are the network of conflict recovery centres that we are developing in war torn countries. While all conflicts have economic, social, environmental and cultural consequences for communities, each situation and community is unique and the conflict recovery centres are an asset that can be shaped to the particular needs and aspirations of people in each location.

On this day in 1970, as we prepare for tonight’s 2026 World Cup kick-off in Mexico, England beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in Guadalajara, thanks to a penalty from Allan Clarke on his senior team debut. The team’s mascot, a bulldog called Winston, who famously travelled to Mexico with the players, was not permitted entry into the stadium.

We are proud to launch The Beautiful Game Tour - a unique fundraising and advocacy challenge led by John Shiels MBE, long-term trustee of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.

After a lifetime dedicated to football, including his role as CEO of the Manchester United Foundation, John is embarking on an extraordinary journey of 1500 miles: cycling to all 92 professional football clubs across the UK.

He will shine a light on the incredible work clubs do within their communities - from charity initiatives to vital grassroots engagement - much of which continues without government funding.

John will use the information gained on tour to lobby the decision makers in the game to address the needs of our forgotten children.

At the same time, he is raising crucial funds for the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, inspired by Sir Bobby’s lifelong love of the beautiful game and its power to change lives. The funds raised will go towards providing access for more children to enjoy free football, safe places to play and trusted adults to support them.

Sir Bobby was a passionate advocate for children to be able to play - to learn not just football skills, but life, team, leadership, and social skills.

Follow John’s journey, support the cause, and help us champion the role of football in changing the lives of children.
