Point and Sandwick Trust (PST) was formed after a series of public meetings held in Point, Isle of Lewis in 2005 to discuss ways in which the community could benefit from renewable energy. The Board is elected by the members of the company at the AGM. With funding support from the then Highlands and Islands Energy Company (now Community Energy Scotland), a feasibility study identified a site on an

area of common grazings apportioned to North Sandwick crofters as suited to a community-owned wind farm. A public meeting in March 2006 endorsed the findings of this feasibility study, and the company (then called Point Power and Energy) decided to apply for a 9MW wind farm on the site.

Another fantastic community event here in Point over the weekend with the epic Leanne Fund Annual Run. Raising money for children and their familes affected by Cystic Fibrosis, there was an excellent turn out and some fantastic efforts from everyone who took part.

This is an event close to our hearts and we've been sponsors for 6 years, it just gets better and better! 💜 Huge congratualtions to all the organisers, volunteers and participants for a fab day! A big thank you to our Board member Jane Watson who handed out the prizes and to SandiePhotos.com who has taken some excellent shots. Check out The Leanne Fund page for many more brilliant pictures and see if you can spot yourself!

Great to see Bùth an Rubha & Café Rubha recognised in Country Life Magazine's 'Reader Rated Pit Stops' feature, celebrating some of the best places to stop and visit across the UK.

Our favourite community-owned café and shop was named 'Best Village Shop' alongside tried-and-tested places around Britain. What a lovely endorsement for the team and everyone who helps make Aros An Rubha such a welcoming place for locals and visitors alike.

Congratulations to everyone involved at Buth an Rubha, Cafe Rubha and Aros an Rubha for such well-deserved recognition!

Huge congratulations to Rhoda and the whole Faire team on achieving the Platinum Digital Telecare Implementation Award.

This is a fantastic recognition of the hard work and commitment that has gone into delivering such an important service for people across the Western Isles, helping them stay safe, independent and connected at home.

Well done to everyone involved! 👏👏👏

Award Recognition for Faire Service

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has been awarded the Platinum Digital Telecare Implementation Award in recognition of the recent completion of the Faire service’s analogue to digital transition project.

To achieve Platinum, a Telecare Service Provider must have successfully rolled out a live digital telecare service to 100% of service users that is operating successfully, without serious issues, or call failures for at least 8 weeks.

Faire, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s telecare service, is a 24-hour-a-day service operated by the Comhairle’s Customer Services Team. The Telecare Service provides an automatic link from the user's home to the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). The ARC is staffed around the clock by a team of officers who have been trained to handle calls efficiently, quickly summoning help when it is needed. Faire currently supports over 1000 people across the Western Isles. The service plays a significant role in helping people live independently and safely at home, offering support and an emergency response.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar was the first Telecare provider in Scotland to adopt the Shared Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) solution. This sector-leading work was made possible thanks to the hard work of Comhairle officer’s and through a strong partnership with the Digital Office, who have provided support and assurance throughout the transition.

Sandy Gomez, Chief Financial Officer, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said: "I am delighted to see the Faire Community Alarm Service being recognised with the Platinum award for Telecare Implementation and would like to thank all involved in the transition project. The team have worked exceptionally hard to reach the milestone of a fully digital service. With an ageing population, we need to ensure our residents can retain their independence for as long as possible and technology such as this allows them to do so. This project has been a real success and will strengthen the delivery of the Comhairle’s lifeline Faire service.”

A new report published this week highlights the difference community ownership can make in renewable energy.

The study found that while Scotland’s onshore wind sector generated billions in profits over the last five years, only a small proportion reached the communities hosting developments... £147 million in community benefit payments over five years, compared to an estimated £5.6 billion in profits for the wider onshore industry.

At PST, we’ve long believed communities should see lasting local benefit from the natural resources around them and we've seen the results of that postive impact first hand.

Over the past decade, our community-owned wind farm has returned around £10 million directly back into the community supporting local projects, charities, services and opportunities across the island.

Community ownership helps make sure renewable energy leaves a positive legacy where it matters most. Read the full article from The Scotsman here 👉👉👉

The findings come ahead of an energy debate in Holyrood today.
