300,000 children face 10-year wait for settled status under UK plans, says IPPR

The consultation closes on Thursday. What is being proposed is dreadful. Can I encourage you to engage with the consultation and put your dissent on record?

The government is consulting on how the current settlement system should be reformed and how those reforms should be implemented.

Care 4 Calais appeal
Supporters may be interested in this appeal from Care4 Calais:

As temperatures drop with the onset of winter, the number of people in living sites across Calais and Dunkirk generally falls. But not this year.

At the moment, we are seeing up to 500 people attending our large distributions in Calais, and around 350 in Dunkirk. With that level of demand, we would normally bring 700 items to each distribution to hand out. But with demand being consistently high, our stock levels are taking a big hit and, as a result, we’ve been unable to carry out a large distribution of our winter snug packs.

With the fall in temperatures, the winter snug packs provide some of the items most needed by the community here. Just £10 will fund a pack, comprising a hat, scarf and gloves, which help keep refugees in northern France warm over the cold winter months.

We believe, across both sites, we need a minimum of 1,000 snug packs to meet demand over the coming weeks. Will you chip in to buy a pack?

Last year, Care4Calais supporters funded hundreds of winter snug packs. And our incredible volunteers got them out to the community here in Calais.

Here are a few of the Post It notes guests & volunteers gave feedback/comments on about the day. Some did themselves, some had help from volunteers.
We also have some written in different scripts awaiting translation. The main thing that came across was how welcoming & friendly people were.

Our Awayday with SPACE4U on Saturday 13th was ,as always an amazing collaboration between the 2 groups. involved. A big thank you to all who contributed towards this event held at Knighton Community Centre.

The kitchen team, cake makers, fruit donations, setting up, photographers, activity & workshop facilitators & backup volunteers. The walk leaders & others alongside the two groups. The musicians & those sharing games & conversations, plus a the warm welcome from all including the town Mayor. Donations of clothes and other items to go back with the guests were very much appreciated, along with a drum collection. Finally those who helped towards fundraising to put the event on.

The walks around Knighton took in the Border crossing place by the river, an HArt venue, Offs D**e centre & town centre. People enjoyed the scenery & the peace & quiet

The coach made good time arriving the earliest yet & had a good run back to Cardiff. We had this message from SPACE4U to day they were safely back. 'Many, many thanks for another wonderful day. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Please thank the team of helpers. You are a great bunch of people, and we are so lucky to have your interest and support'.

Government suspends family reunion

Yvette Cooper just stood in front of Parliament and announced a blanket suspension on refugee family reunion, making it all but impossible for unaccompanied children to join with loved ones in the UK.

The UK’s stringent immigration system already keeps countless families apart. We’re talking about children fleeing war and persecution in Afghanistan, Sudan or Iran, stuck in squalid camps for months or even years, whose only hope of survival is family reunion.

Now, the Government wants to trap them in danger even longer. We’ll be fighting this decision tooth and nail. But we need your help.

This government claims they want to "smash the gangs" – but they're destroying one of the only safe routes available to refugees.

They’re not saving lives. They're surrendering to the far-right.

Families belong together, and we’ll never stop fighting for their rights. Thanks for being part of this.

HOST A POTLUCK!

Dear KDRSG Supporters,

We are rapidly approaching Refugee Week from 16th - 22nd of June. The theme for this year is Celebrating Community.

Refugee Action, a charity supporting refugees and people seeing asylum, are promoting a Host A Potluck campaign to celebrate Refugee Week.

We like this event as it is easy to organise, fun and allows all our supporters to participate in Refugee Week and fundraise much-needed funds. The idea is to host a potluck dinner inviting family and/or friends with every person bringing a meaningful or special dish to share with others. Each guest is invited to make a donation to Refugee Action. This is a lovely way of creating community and sharing stories whilst also showing solidarity towards people seeking safety.

Full details about the scheme can be found here https://www.refugee-action.org.uk/host-a-potluck/

We invite you to consider participating in this scheme whether you join the official Refugee Action fundraising or, more informally, fundraise for KDRSG. As a group we have decided to extend the deadline for the scheme until the end of July. It would also be wonderful to see photos of your potlucks, especially if we could post the photos to our page.

Best wishes,
KDRSG

Host a Potluck meal in support of Refugee Action – because it’s Potluck the hand we’re dealt in life. By coming together around food, we take meaningful action in support of refugees, showing solidarity in the face of division and intolerance.
