Knaresborough Station Friends A group of volunteers interested in preserving & improving Knaresborough Station’s green spaces!

We are a small group of people at present formed with the aim of promoting, preserving and improving our station. We are all volunteers and keen to hear from anyone else who might be interested in organising events, participating in working parties, light gardening and do-it-yourself.

A beautiful Railway Commission 🎨

This month our Artmakers finished a very special commission for friends of Knaresborough train station! This beautiful mosaic, inspired by Knaresborough’s very own viaduct, now sits proudly at the train station for everyone to admire.

The mosaic took months to complete and was based on an original drawing by one of our amazing Artmakers, Jacob. Jacob was inspired by a print created by Andrew Morrison in our print workshop of a train crossing the Knaresborough viaduct. Jacob recreated the print in his own style using lots of bright colours, clean lines and tile-like shapes, perfect for a mosaic!

Henshaws would like to thank our mosaic workshop leader Shirley for working incredibly hard with her team of Artmakers on this fantastic opportunity. Make sure you get down to Knaresborough train station and take a look!

WARNING! LONG POST INCOMING!

Recently ALOT has happened here at Knaresborough! The group have been incredibly busy, our working team have been working hard & funds have been raised for future projects!

All summer our weekly gardening group have been slowly chipping away at the woodland area by the tunnel entrance on platform 1. Network Rail sadly had to fell 3 rotten unsafe trees, so our workers requested that they were left for our use & as the undergrowth was tamed & brought back under control, our team used the lengths of felled trees to mark out a woodland pathway.

Once the taming of the jungle had been completed, 1 very generous member of the group kindly organised for 10 tonnes of woodchip to be delivered from our local tree surgeons Scotton Tree Care. This of course has to be barrowed into place! So a fortnight ago we rallied the troops & promptly wheeled all 10,000kg of woodchips down the Leeds platform & into place under the now tidy woodland area!

Quietly in the background we’ve also had an artwork installation in progress! Northern very generously gave us a grant to pay for the commission of 4 railway themed pieces of artwork! As a group we commissioned local super talent Paul Mirfin - artist, musician & train conductor! Paul created 4 oil on canvas paintings, with scenes of our beautiful historical railway station through the eras & printed posters of these paintings have now been installed to brighten up the underside of the Leeds platform canopy.

Last week saw the working party planting new lower growing perennials & 100 daffodil bulbs around the edges of the freshly created woodland trail! & this week Northerns team replaced our summer begonias & geraniums with winter primulas & pansies!

That then brings us upto tonight!

Tonight we held an auction evening in The Old Ticket Office! The event was put on by the coffee shop, free to attend & with the cries of town crier Mark Hunter it drew a cheerful crowd of supporters with very deep pockets! Local auctioneer Ian Thornton of Thornton & Lindley Auctioneers volunteered his time & professional services & auctioned the 4 original oil paintings that we had commissioned by Paul Mirfin!

In total we raised as incredible sum of £995 & the 4 paintings have gone off to wonderful new homes!

So what next? We have huge winter plans that we’re incredibly excited to make a start with! So watch this space for updates on our next instalment!!!

Our shows lovely Knaresborough railway station 🚂😍

We often share photos of the view from Knaresborough viaduct, which you cross when you travel by train between Knaresborough and Harrogate. This charming and pretty train station is squeezed in between the viaduct and tunnel through the cliff on the banks of the River Nidd. Making it pretty unique!

Knaresborough train station has its own antiques shop; gin bar, the Track and Sleeper; and café, The Old Ticket Office, serving delicious homemade food (and mouth-watering homemade cakes). Together with its period features and perfectly kept floral displays, the station is an experience in itself 😊 It’s the ideal gateway to the wonderful medieval town of Knaresborough, with its iconic castle on the cliffs, and river with rowing boats, beautiful waterside walks and amazing ice cream parlours 🏰🚣🍨

Travelling by train between Harrogate and Knaresborough takes less than ten minutes and trains run very frequently, in each direction, between the two towns. So you can easily enjoy both of them in one weekend, or during a relaxing break away in North Yorkshire 🥰
