The RNLI is a charity who survive on donations and fundraising....what an amazing thing to do, we really appreciate your creativity.

Commissions from art works sold were poignantly shared with Soma Light. This charity raise awareness to improve mental health for Orkney's youth, one goal being to prevent su***de.

The Societe Humaine et des Naufrages (SHN), at Boulogne-Sur-Mer, was the first maritime rescue society founded on the European continent, established in 1825 by a Franco-British Committee, to save lives at sea. They were inspired by the creation of the RNLI in the UK.

The SHN at Boulogne-sur-Mer was one of two such societies that were the foundations of the modern day SNSM (Societe Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer) in France.

The bringer of our gift was a retired volunteer crew member from France. πŸ’™πŸ€β€οΈ

Over the last few training sessions, the volunteer lifeboat crew have been joined by some potential new recruits. The recruits go out on two training exercises on the boat prior to being considered. This also gives them the chance to withdraw their application if they decide its not for them.

The volunteer crew and the new recruits have been training in casualty care and man overboard out in Kirkwall Bay. They have also been practicing with a breeches buoy while anchored to the north face of Kirkwall Pier.

A breeches buoy is a rope-based rescue device used to extract people from one place to another. The device resembles a round life buoy with a leg harness attached. The rope system is similar to a zip wire.

The volunteer crew undertake vital training so they are prepared for different situations when they answer the call on their pagers to save lives at sea.

RNLI Kirkwall Lifeboat Station Open Day 16 May 2026

Please read below a heartfelt thank you from our outgoing RNLI Kirkwall Fundraisers' convenor and organiser of this year's open day. Sonia Smith is standing down after some amazing highlights, including the RNLI 200th Anniversary in 2024 and the Island Games 2025.

"When organising an event there is so much work that goes into the preparation, and without many people behing the scenes it would not happen, the weather was also kind to us.

On behalf of the crew and fundraising group, I would like to thank the following people and organisations:
🧑 Harbours for allowing us to use the pier.
πŸ’™ The Fire Brigade, Coastguard and Ambulance Service who came along to support us.
🧑 Orkney Rowing Club Sco47947
πŸ’™ The live musicians - Auskerry, Stoatfinger, Forky Tail and Kirkwall City Pipe Band.
🧑 Orkney Rugby Club for the use of their tents and E Fraser Electrical for transporting them.
πŸ’™ Pablo's Grill for keeping everyone fed.
🧑 Baikies for selling raffle tickets and.......the many local businesses who contributed raffle prizes.
πŸ’™ To YOU, the public who came along and supported the day....we hope you had fun and made some more memories.

We appreciate you all so much, all who helped and came along. To date we have raised Β£3,348, we will update you when the final total is available....."
