πŸ“Ÿ LAUNCH πŸ“Ÿ On Sunday at 10.27 (23 Aug), duty volunteer crew responded to an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) activation off Rerwick Head. RNLB Margaret Foster made good speed to assist other vessels who had responded, this was an extensive coordinated search.

Four hours later the crew and lifeboat were stood down, refuelled and ready for the next service call.

We welcomed student nurses, Annie, Charlotte and Kaitlyn, on our last few training exercises, continuing the community engagement with NHS Orkney.

They joined us on a number of life saving processes including breeches buoy and casuality care focusing on stretcher work with both PS1 and bucket types. We also practised Y-boat launch, anchoring, navigation and local knowledge.

Excellent steering! We hope that this is a worthwhile, enjoyable and inspirational experience. 🧑🌊🧑

Why does water pour out of the lifeboat? πŸ€”

The powerful marine diesel engines of the Severn class lifeboat use raw seawater to cool the exhaust systems and heat exchangers.

The used cooling water is forcefully expelled out through the two outlets at the stern transom, or the big plugs at the back of the boat.

Cool 😎
