We are supporting Loughborough University with the recruitment of volunteers that live in the town of Kirkwall to take part in discussion groups about what people need for an acceptable standard of living in 2026. Other areas in Orkney will be covered by a separate process 💡

Volunteer participants will be invited to take part in one of three, in person, focus groups led by professional researchers on Monday 21 September 2026 in the St Magnus Centre 📌

The phased switch-off of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) signal is going to be complete next week. Households which haven't had the RTS meters replaced might notice that storage heaters and immersion hot water tanks stop working as normal.

If your heating and hot water is affected by the RTS switch-off, contact your electricity supplier as it is their responsibility to fix the issue. The phased switch-off of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) which controls certain electricity meters, mainly Total Heat Total Control in Orkney, is going to be complete by the end of this month.

If you still have an RTS meter, the advice is to contact your supplier to book a replacement as soon as possible. THAW staff are very happy to help with this.

We can also help identify if your current meter is RTS if you aren't sure and give advice on what replacement meters and tariffs are available.
