🌟 Volunteer Spotlight – PO(SCC) Stacey Leeming 🌟

Today we are proud to highlight one of our dedicated volunteers, PO(SCC) Stacey Leeming.

Stacey’s Sea Cadet journey began in 2004 when she transferred from the Army Cadets to Morecambe Sea Cadets. Following a family move, she joined Runcorn Sea Cadets, where she progressed through the ranks and achieved the highest cadet rank possible, Petty Officer Cadet, in 2007.

One of the highlights of Stacey’s cadet career was attending the National Trafalgar Day Parade in London on several occasions, representing the Sea Cadets on a national stage.

In 2008, Stacey left the organisation to pursue a college course that led to a successful career as a chef, including time working in Guernsey as a Pastry Chef.

Stacey returned to Sea Cadets in 2020, joining St Helens Sea Cadets as a member of the Unit Management Team. In 2022, she moved into the instructional team, helping to deliver training to cadets, before transferring to Newton Sea Cadets in 2024.

In April this year, Stacey joined TS Daring as our Juniors Training Officer (JTO). In this role, she leads our Junior Cadets programme, planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate training in line with our Junior Sea Cadet syllabus.

Thank you, Stacey, for everything you have contributed during your time with TS Daring so far. Your enthusiasm, experience, and commitment to our young people are greatly appreciated, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact you make within the unit.

🌟 Volunteers’ Week Spotlight 🌟

Today, we’re celebrating another of our incredible volunteers, Unit Training Officer PO(SCC) Tom Elliss.

Tom joined Sea Cadets as an Adult Volunteer at St Helens Unit in 2019 and has since dedicated his time and expertise across several units, including St Helens, Widnes, Newton-le-Willows, and now Kirkby, where he serves as our Unit Training Officer.

As UTO, Tom is responsible for developing our training programme, ensuring cadets have engaging and varied learning opportunities throughout parade nights. He also keeps cadets and staff informed about upcoming courses and development opportunities, helping everyone make the most of their Sea Cadet experience.

As if that wasn’t enough, Tom also volunteers as the District Support Officer for First Aid, acting as the district’s key point of contact for all things first aid and supporting units across the district, and you can often find him on NW Area First Aid At Work courses delivering training or carrying out assessments!

Tom’s dedication, commitment, and willingness to go above and beyond make a huge difference to our cadets, staff, and the wider district.

👏 Thank you, Tom, for your outstanding contribution and everything you do for our unit and beyond!

Today we’re shining a spotlight on our First Lieutenant, PO(SCC) Andrew Cunningham.

Andrew joined Newton Le Willows Sea Cadets in 2015 and progressed all the way through the cadet ranks to Leading Cadet before aging out and beginning his journey as a Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer with Newton Le Willows Sea Cadets in 2021.

Having spent 4 years as a member of the instructional team at TS Warspite, an opportunity arose here at Kirkby for Andrew to further his own development and step into the First Lieutenant role.

As First Lieutenant, Andrew serves as the unit’s second-in-command, deputising in the absence of our Commanding Officer and ensuring the ship’s routine runs smoothly on parade nights.

A major part of his role is supporting the development and training of our staff team alongside the Unit Training Officer (who will be featured tomorrow!). Andrew also acts as a key point of contact for our uniformed volunteers and cadets, providing guidance, support, and assistance whenever needed.

His dedication, leadership, and commitment to the unit play a vital role in helping our cadets and volunteers succeed.

âš“ Thank you for everything you do for us, PO! âš“

⚓ Volunteers’ Week – Meet the Team! ⚓

Throughout Volunteers’ Week, we’ll be introducing some of the incredible volunteers who give their time, energy, and expertise to support our cadets.

First up is our Commanding Officer, Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Dan Tench RNR.

Dan’s Sea Cadet journey began in St Helens in 2005 at the age of 12. During his time as a cadet, he progressed to the rank of Leading Cadet before leaving in 2010 to begin an apprenticeship in the fishing industry.

After completing his apprenticeship, Dan started his adult volunteering journey as a Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer with the Stretford & Urmston unit in Manchester, before eventually returning to St Helens.

Following the completion of a Deck Officer cadetship in 2017, the pull of Sea Cadets proved too strong to resist, and Dan returned as a volunteer instructor, serving with both St Helens and Newton units.

In early 2025, Dan took the helm as Officer in Charge of Kirkby & Liverpool North Unit. Alongside the team, he helped guide the unit to become the Most Improved Unit in the North West Area for 2025, as well as achieving a prestigious Burgee Efficiency Award – the highest accolade a unit can receive during an RNP inspection.

Dan’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to developing young people embody everything that Volunteers’ Week celebrates.

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication, Sir! 🫡👏🏻
