The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie - Tuesday 20th January

What a great talk this was and so well supported by members and visitors alike. Mark took us on a journey through Agatha's life from early childhood and home education, marriages and loss of her parents explaining what influenced Agatha's writing and how the writing changed as she matured and experiences shaped her. He talked us through so many of her books, 66 of which were detective novels, I believe he has read every one! His talk wasn't just about books though, Agatha was a complex woman who served as a nurse in World War 1 and trained in dispensing, gaining an expert knowledge of poisons (very useful to her writing!), she loved, lost and learnt to love again whilst also discovering a great love of travel and houses buying many throughout her life and decorating them to her taste.
A thoroughly entertaining talk.

If you would like to join us next time: Tuesday 17th March,
John Flower - The Leicester Artist.

Kirby Muxloe History Group - January Meeting

Unfortunately Mark Temple was unwell and unable to deliver his talk so the Agatha Christie fans among you will need to wait until next year for him to ‘reveal all’.

Luckily at very short notice our committee stepped in and prepared two excellent talks so that the meeting could still go ahead, we’d like to thank them for doing that.

Val gave an interesting talk about the inscriptions on the gravestones in Kirby Muxloe Churchyard followed by the story of 'Murder on a summer's night' the tale of Samuel Deacon who was murdered in the spinney close to Braunstone Crossroads in 1854. His grave can be seen near the side church door bearing this grisly information.

After the break Judith talked about the 'Lost Houses of Kirby Muxloe', reminding us of all the beautiful village houses sadly demolished during the last century. Both talks were accompanied by pictures.

At the end of last year a survey/ideas gathering took place and the results of this were discussed. The most popular subjects with the group were as below and will be incorporated into future meetings and events:

General History - WWI and WWII and archaeology.
Local industries, village residents and families.
Transport and history of local pubs.
Leicester hospitals and childhood memories.

We look forward to welcoming you all to the March meeting –
Leicester Cathedral Revealed.

**Apologies Agatha Christie postponed due to illness, alternative talks will go ahead.

The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie

Who has never sat enthralled while Hercule Poirot delivers his exacting unravelling of the recent horrific murders? Surely, we all love a good Agatha Christie whether a novel, film or if you’re lucky enough to have seen it England’s longest running play!

Join us on Tuesday 21st January for Mark Temple’s talk ‘The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie’ where Mark goes behind the scenes to tell us more about this truly intriguing lady, extensive traveller, war nurse and author of approximately 80 novels and short stories who herself went mysteriously missing for over 10 days.

Mark is a local historian and one of the Directors of Swannington Heritage Trust. He is experienced in giving talks on Stoneywell and the Gimson family, The Railways, Windmills and of course Agatha Christie.

Members and visitors all welcome. Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club, 19.30.
