History of Rumbling Bridge
Did you know that the gorge at Rumbling Bridge was a must-see for eighteenth-century visitors? The arrival of the Devon Valley Railway at Rumbling Bridge in 1863 has been said to have transformed Rumbling Bridge from a not-so-quiet ‘backwater’ into a tourist hot spot.

The talk is at Moubray Hall, May 30th @ 7 pm.

Rumbling Bridge attracted many celebrity visitors, including Andrew Carnegie, Prince Napoleon, and Ramsay Macdonald, and its hotel was promoted as having the best grounds of any in Scotland. Today, though, it is virtually unknown – not even mentioned in the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides - and its walkways are in a poor state. This talk explores the fascinating story of the rise and decline of Rumbling Bridge as a tourist destination.

For the past 12 years, the playframe in Swansacre Playgroup’s garden has been at the heart of outdoor play. It’s climbed, swung from, imagined onand laughed around by generations of children.

We estimate it’s seen over 9,000 hours of play and it’s truly been loved every minute of it.

Sadly, time and weather are starting to show. After more than a decade of daily adventures, the playframe is reaching the end of its life and now needs to be replaced to keep our children safe.

That’s where Play It Forward comes in. Due to a change in requirements by our insurance, we now have to purchase a commercial grade play frame and additional safety surfacing, so our fundraising goal has had to increase. We’re now fundraising £12,000 to put replace the existing playframe with a like-for-like commercial grade structure, in Summer 2026. This will ensure that today’s children (and many more to come) can enjoy the same opportunities for outdoor play, creativity, confidence-building, and adventure.

Every donation, big or small, will help us:
Create a safe, engaging outdoor play environment
Support physical development, imagination, and social play
Invest in years of future play, laughter, and learning

By donating, you’re not just replacing a piece of equipment, you’re playing it forward for hundreds of children yet to come. Thank you so much for your support 💛
