Behavioural monitoring💡

Using a remote CCTV system in the conservation breeding for release centre, the Saving Wildcats team can closely monitor wildcats that are eligible for release without disturbing them 🎦

This behavioural monitoring helps the team understand the types of innate behaviours that the wildcats are capable of displaying, which gives the team confidence that they could display these behaviours after they're released 🐾

Here's one of the young males in the pre-release enclosures for you to observe for 30 seconds 🧡

Earlier this year, the project conducted the sixth consecutive winter survey focusing on wild-living cats within the project area 📸

Using an extensive network of trail cameras, the team were able to identify at least 17 wildcats, and that doesn't account for those who may be camera-shy... 🐾

We’re proud to be a part of Scottish Environment LINK's Nature Champions 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

For 13 years, Nature Champions has supported Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to champion Scotland’s threatened and iconic species and habitats 🌄

The initiative provides an engaging, hands-on way for MSPs to understand the threats facing Scotland’s natural environment and the importance of protecting our biodiversity. It also highlights the need for the benefits of nature to be considered across policy and decision-making 💡

Encourage your new MSPs to be a and champion Scotland's native wildlife, including wildcats.

Wildcats prefer a mosaic of habitats, including grassland, mixed woodland, scrub, moorland, and farmland.

They utilise the edges of these habitats for moving around and hunting, as this is often where small mammals are present.

Four further wildcat releases planned for this summer ☀️

In 2025, four wildcats were born in the conservation breeding for release centre, based at Highland Wildlife Park.

They have spent the last year preparing for a challenging life in the wild in large pre-release enclosures, and they're now eligible for release into the Scottish Highlands to strengthen the newly establishing population 🌄
